*FREAKS*

they are off her back! OMG! They are darker but still white in places! One is missing its telson! so surely that one wont make it!
I dont know what to do! Most of them are digging under the water bowl and now im scared that will fall and crush them! it shouldnt but...EEEK! what to do! im freaking out!

She still has one on her back but that one could just be hitching a ride!

She runs to them when we are there watching...does that mean she could eat them still now?

I dont know what to do!

It sounds like she's being a protective mom, and that they all molted successfully to second instar. Very Happy

The water bowl shouldn't collapse unless they excavate the whole area underneath it. The one without a telson will be fine as long as it doesn't suffer from any anal blockages.

I think at least 2 missing the telson! Typical!

When I misted. Know I shouldnt but they wee after water and all were hidden at the time. Misted and sprayed but she went NUTSO! tried to rush out but bumped herself on the hide! DOH!
Ive soaked the flooring in one spot, so if they want water all they have to do is stand on the area!

When she was protecting them, they didnt know to run to her back so she was basically on top of the ones outside the hide and wrapping her chela around them! Was really sweet!

I will offer crushed food tomorrow for her and leave it no more then 24 hours, this allows the babies a chance to eat something. Im trying to remain calm! I will seperate them from mummy on Sunday after we get back from Oxford and visiting friends.
I know I will worry the entire time but it allows them to "harden" a bit more and get used to free time away from mum before being stressed and moved!

They are just SO SO SO SO CUTE! some are more darker, obviously older and eugh, too cute!

I know all could die still, I know some could die. I just hope at least 5 survive!

Sounds like you're doing good so far. I think she's beyond the "stress --> eating babies" point. Now she's just being protective. And that's a good idea giving them an extra couple days to harden as well as offering them a first meal.

They are still white, some of them. But it still means they have moulted right?

Tonight crushed food will be offered and left outside the hide and Sunday when we get back is the scary job of removing them from mummy!
OMG she is really really protective! Was going to "tail her" to get her out and with a brush if someone is hanging on to brush off *an un used make up brush for eyes* and put her in a container. Then spoon the babies into another container. Then to run my hands and pick out and look though EVERYTHING to make sure all are out! rehome them and then clean her out and rehome her.

Now...heat mat...on the wall..but inside wall or outside wall?

Oh! also saw last night one "eating itself" but then realised the little one was having a wash! I had to leave the room before doing a massive *SQUEEEEEEE*

I have some blurry pictures on my phone which I have sent to my good friend but she will email them to me hopefully later today and then I can post some blurry mobile phone pictures. She bringing her digital camera on Tuesday to see them and we shall try to take some pictures!
Its just annoying that im soooo close to the glass and can see their fine details yet the phone wont pick it up!

Look at Thaedion's picture of a 2I eating -- you can see that even then they're pretty pale sometimes.

Heat mats go on the outside wall of a tank.

Sounds like you've been doing a good job! Smile

One is much darker and bigger then the rest! Must have been one of the first out and first to moult. *SQUEEEE*

Im glad im not at the flat tonight as I know I would just be fussing and really fussing when the "food" goes in! Im glad I cant see and worry about the situation!

now im worried. will they be ok without food over the weekend? we leaving soon...infact i SHOULD be packing...

They won't molt to third instar for a while. That's just the old molts getting scattered about.

If you haven't left yet, toss in a prekilled cricked for the weekend. If you've already left, they should be fine. Smile

In Oxford...well just outside. no food for them now until sunday. I will try not to worry as I know his brother coming to feed will make sure they have sometime to drink. Will just try again on Sunday...but I feel like a mother going away for a few days. Im filled with worry but cant phone Stingy to ask how things are going.

Ok. thinking about taking them away from mummy tonight. Is this a good idea? Too soon?

We about to set up their tank.

Maybe a good thing since there are a few small white bugs walking about...im guessing its the same as to what Stingy had in her tank last time.

How would you get mummy out? very nervous as know she will go nutso!

and some pictures of them at 2 weeks and 1 day old

in the first picture you can see two under the hide. and in the last one...can you spot the teeny tiny chela poking out?

I can see the tiny pinchers sticking out. So cute! Razz

Maybe a good way to get mom out would be to herd her into a deli cup and lift that out while you collect the babies.

If they've all molted, then it's ok to do it -- however, it's also ok to leave them in longer. If you want to be able to deal with mom without her freaking out if you look at her funny, then I'd go ahead and remove them.

18 babies all in their own tank! was a task catching them all! quite fast and some all hidden in the cork bark! couldnt get them out, just as well I was going to use some cork bark from mums tank!
Mum wasnt happy about it...I wonder how she feels now? I feel sad actually that Ive removed her babies. Will she miss them?

I was going to offer food to both tanks but I think I will wait until tomorrow night! I doubt either mum nor babies will want to eat after being super stressed out by the change!

Eighteen! That's a nice brood. Smile At least this gives you a chance to change mom's substrate (you were planning on that, weren't you?). She won't miss them, and she'll calm down soon.

Waiting a day for feeding is probably a good idea.

I havent given a false bottom set up but at least she is on a better substrate!
Yeah 18. A rather impressive number!

I dont know if its hot enough for them though as most are all pressed against the heat mat wall...I have whacked up the heating so that should help! If things dont improve then I will probably have to stick the heat mat on the inside wall...will have to wait and see.

Going to try to feed them tonight.

Last night was up until 11:15 worried about them drowing as I put in a small lid ((the lid that covers cat tins))...cleaned of course! and they are actually currently scared of water! would go to have a look...sorta get in and have to walk to the water as its not sitting very flat and they FREAK out and run away at top speed! so at least I dont have to worry too much at the moment hehehehe.

Stingy hasnt shown herself yet. She hasnt got a HUGE depth as ran out, will top it up when I get paid so she can burrow. Will buy a good few bricks ready to make a false bottom set up with im ready. But for now I know the babies have a LOT of humidity! so much we have had to put some more holes in their lid!
My main concern is heat for them though!

I have some pictures on my phone, will try to get those posted soon

PostSubject: Re: Scorplings   Scorplings - Page 3 Empty2/26/2008, 9:53 am

I went back after posting and getting ready for bed to see them all piled around the one cricket! some even poking up vertically eating! about 14 around the one cricket. So I opened tank and move the other still somehow alive with no head cricket and I think someone must have taken that as it wasnt where I put it last night.

Tonight as im away he will remove any left over remains and do the process again, just to make sure all get a good feed so they dont eat each other!

Stingy hasnt been fed again yet. Will do that Thursday, give her a few more days to adjust to the change because she is an adult, had her babies removed. So dont think she is "happy"
She must...MUST wonder where they are and im tempted to put...some back in...would that be a good idea? would she know it was her babies?

A scorpion's ganglion isn't capable of the more complex emotions humans' brains are. She'll wander for a bit looking for them (much like a tarantula might look for a recently-pulled eggsac), but she'll calm down quick and probably wouldn't know the difference if you put them back in.

So, if everyone's separate and doing well, it's best just to leave things as it is.

Ok. so she wouldnt be all protective again if they went back in? I wont put them back in I guess it would stress them too much but I guess its just my "woman feelings" making me think this other female would be missing her babies
