| I am thinking about placing a heat pad on the side of my emperor scorpions enclosure so that he will hopefully become more active and or happier. Currently he is under his hide on the right side of his enclosure. Where should I place the heat pad? Should I place it on his side or on the side where he is not?
Thank you | |

| You can put it on whatever side you prefer but not the bottom. Never the bottom. If you put it on the right and he moves his hide to the left it was too warm if he moves to the heat it's what he wants. As long as he can move his hide by burrowing a new one he will self regulate. | |

| A little extra heat in the tank can't hurt, but don't be surprised if your scorpions' activity level remains about the same. An Emperor you don't see is an Emperor that feels safe and comfortable in its current surroundings. In the wild, Emperors typically only leave their burrows when looking for a mate. The rest of the time they stay hidden in their burrow, or if they're hungry, sitting near the entrance waiting for prey to pass by.
It's also been my experience that once these guys dig a burrow, they pretty much stick with it, regardless whether or not conditions are better (or become better) on the other side of the enclosure. Since they can tolerate a rather broad range of temperatures, I think they instinctively choose security over comfort.

| Interesting point shebeen , so maybe bust up the hide and pack it all fresh with your new heating system and force him to dig a new hide which will hopefully be in the ideal location?
EDIT:
Or just add the heat and leave well enough alone. Since the worst thing for our scorpions may be us tampering all the time.

| Although tempting, I wouldn't rearrange the tank unless you're adding another scorpion or you need to change the substrate for some reason. As you said, best to leave well enough alone. My Emperor enclosure is not ideal but it's as good enough. Still, I fight the urge every week to do it over and make it "better". | |

| Well thanks a bunch guys very useful information I appreciate it. My emperor enclosure does not have an appropriate amount of substrate for efficient burrowing I was thinking of changing it today and taking him out so i can add more what do you guys think is the best option for me? do it or leave it how it is?

| Since you need more substrate, definitely go ahead and redo your tank. Your scorp will be much better off. | |
