Ummm Just get two hides. One with a heat mat, one with none.

and the heat mat should be placed on the side of the tank and not underneath...

My emperator's heat matt is ON THE SIDE of the tank and NOT UNDERNEATH, at the opposite end to the hide. Hell sleep in the hide mostly, but if he wants warmth will sit by the matt.
Having too hides is a good idea.

My hide for single scorpions are in the middle, a large one. So there is offer of heat or not as much each depending on what side of the hide
