Family not liking my choice of pet? Anyone else in the same boat?

Just wondered if anyone alse had the problem of parents/grandparents/family not liking your choice of pet lol...... my dad would love my new scorps as he kept them himself amoungst other things like snakes and gekos (but unfortunatly he passed a few years ago) but today i was met by negative commenst from my mum and nan which annoyed me a bit, comments such as.... "what do you want that for" and "why" and a general turning the nose up sort of thing! Which i find even more annoying considering my cousin owns a reptile shop which sell everything from tarantulas , reptiles to scorps and pretty much whatever you want really!
( to be honest they quite negative towards my taste in music too lol the whole metal/nu-metal/thrash metal kinda thing but hey i can live with that lol)

so anyway just wondered if anyone else has to deal with the same thing?

i had that problem when i got my first spinny my mum and my stuck up sister said the same thing and my brothers thought it was going to kill them lol. But i got it any way then everyone loved it. But now hes dead and now my mum (who was dead set against me getting one)is buying me four more next week

i know my sister still hates it but shes going to university next saturday so she has no say in the matter anymore. and my brothers still think a spinifer has a lethal enough venom to kill them lol. my mum really wants me to get some more of them and my dad doesent like them so much he thinks its dangerous lol.

by the way where do you get your scorps from? because im not to far from you, i live in worthing and its a nightmare getting hold of them

Mezzle992... same story here... but you're still young so don't let it get to your head... at age 31, my mom still makes me feels negative about my choice of pets, career, girlfriends etc. But she gave up on pressing me to change my true self...

after years of passive conditioning...

Here's a neat trick...

Mom: What do you want that for?
You: Nothing, I just want it...
Mom: Don't you know I hate poisonous creatures, creepy crawlies and your metal music...
You: Yes mom... and that is exactly why I love them LOLz live with it LOLZ...

lol....well they will have to live with my choices, im not living my life the way they want lol.....as far as scorps we got the last one from virginia cheeseman which came really quick with good comms...the other one we got from canterbury exotics wihich is like literally 10 mins down the road from us... my cousins Tanya + Simon can get hold of them and i think they deliver they have a website but its not complete yet as far as i know but there details are....

that first one looks promising but the sites not finished which is a pain.
the place i got my first scorp from was called amering aquatics and i asked for a baby but i got a full adult and it died of old age after 3 months. do you think i should try them again. because the shop just orders them and doesent know anything about them.

be better if you go in and look at them before you buy, personally i wouldnt get them from there again, virginia cheeseman is good we just got our sub-adult from her she delivers the nxt day and the scorp is fine

ive been trying to find somewhere round here where i can go and see them before i buy them. but there is just nowhere i might talk to their supplier and find out what went wrong.

My mom actually didn't care about my scorpions when I she found my asian forest scorpions in my closet. She actually said, "Oh, we had those all over the place in Vietnam. Those don't hurt, but the centipedes do."

Well, one of the best ways is to continually educate them. You may have to repeat things over and over, but eventually they will come to accept your scorps. Avoid screw-ups, keep them in a distinguished area (preferably away from where it's people busy) and let them know you're more than capable of handling them.

These are the things I've done and the people in my life have come to accept it. Not to mention I make fun of furry animals too, lol. For instance, for my dog-loving friends, I tell them in jest: "I don't need an animal that comes running up to me for hugs so I can boost my self-esteem." haha

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. All that matters is YOU like them. I get comments all the time at work, I ignore them. Everyone likes something different.

i agree everyone should have there own opinion but maybe... sometimes ..they should keep it to themselves, scorpions are awesome ....im really not into fluffy "cute" animals, should of seen my mums face when i said we have 3 scorps now lol

I know they're entitled to it, but sometimes it's just common courtesy not to keep shoving their opinions down your throat all the time. It's unnecessary and annoying over time.
You love your scorps, so get as many as you want. You have to put up with their blabbering, so they'll have to put up with more scorpions

lol yep they will coz kinda getting addicted now....i want them all ,,, i never asked for there opinion, was just trying to shaere our joy but got knocked back with negative comments lol.....cant wait till they get there nxt kitten lol...and i can return th favour of opinion sharing .

Lol. At first my mum was goin all skitzo on me for wanting to get scorpions. Now she is the one looking for them for me

I couldn't have gotten where I am today if I didn't move on and do what I wanted and needed for myself.

There's just respect and courtesy that many people fail to have when using their freedom of speech and that's where the abuse of that right comes in. Just because someone can say something, doesn't mean they should. For example, if you're at a funeral, you wouldn't expect anyone to say, "I'm glad that guy's dead." People can say some very crude, hurtful, and insensitive things to others; there's a time and place for it all. That's all I have to say to that.

Exactly! i think you should only share your opinion directly if your asked for it or you really think its going to make a positive difference..not go out of yr way to make someone feel 5 again lol .. i dont care if they have there disapproving conversations between themselves lol

Just to add other peoples opinions in silly little things like choice of pet or hairstyle have never stopped me doing what i want but i think why bother commenting,except me for who i am ...obviously if there opinion was on something life changing or like a life and death thing say drug taking or doing something really stupid then yeah they are your family they have a right to try and help..... but on little things.... if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything at all.... having said all that i am a very self concious person and do care about what other people think of me way to much so i am probably just being way other sensitive to others opinions and thats not there fault.... oh well time to move on lol scorps are staying and now we have 3 lol thats 1 per week so far hehehe

lol we plan to...already looking into what else we can have ( like simple beginer types)...and also wouldnt want anything deadly.... wouldnt b bothered but with 2 small children i wouldnt want to risk it already these are well padlocked lol ... we are still not sure what the baby one is that we have is there any way of def telling when they are young we think it might be a lonigmanus but only 2 people have commented so far in the ID section and as we are complete noobs have no idea lol
