I've joined here as those on this site seem knowledgeable. I'm new to scorpions. I have an adult H.spinnifer as heard this were good as a starter. She is in a 140 litre tank with 6 inch coco fibre substrate. A 50w heatbulb at one end that keeps the end of the tank at 80 degrees. There are two hides and a waterbowl. The humidity is high and soil kept moist. My problem is that she has not eaten once since I got her about a month and a half ago. She just stays in her hide and I don't see her out at night either. I am aware these can go without food for a long time but I need reassurance and advice. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

Your setup sounds great, and what you're describing is perfectly normal behavior. I wouldn't worry. Smile

On another note, are you sure your scorpion is an H. spinifer? I've found that most scorpions being sold as H. spinifer are really H. petersii. If you post some pics up in the ID section I'll take a look.

Best,

Collin

I had an emp go 8 months without eating once. This is pretty normal.

That being said what are you trying to feed it, and how often?

One thing that can interfere with a scorpions eating is vibrations going through the tank from an external source. Aquariums nearby can sometimes cause this,as can speakers playing music, even a TV at high volume for long periods, maybe an old fridge, anything that vibrates the floorboards or walls may send vibrations through the enclosure via the desk or stand the scorpions are kept on. A scorpion gains a lot of it's information about what's moving around near it by sensing vibrations in the air and substrate, they cant detect and home in on the vibrations coming from the insect if there is a constant background vibration through their enclosure,it may know something is nearby, but not be able to sense whether it's a prey item or something to hide from.
As already stated, scorpions can go long periods without feeding, particularly if they can obtain moisture from other sources,so their may be nothing wrong at all,but it's worth checking imo.
Also, you could try feeding the scorp crickets or other food items using tongs,if it grabs the insect it will probably be in defence, but once it has it it may eat it. Use long tongs, don't get tagged!
