| I will be leaving for a 10 day holiday and wondering what I should do with my 2i A australis and H jayakaris
Its about 24C where I keep them and the heat mat ups it to about 32C
Should I disconnect the heatmat for the 10days and try dampen part of the substrate and container walls just before I leave?
Would that be enough?
Should i leave a few crickets in for each or should I not bother? Dont want them being eaten if any of them decides to moult while I am away
Any suggestions will be appreciated
Thanks Shane | |

| They're scorpions so 10 days without food shouldn't be a problem. My main worry if I was away that long is if there was a hot spell and the temperature in their enclosures got to high. Is the mat statted to avoid this? If not, I'd probably do as you mentioned and turn the mat off and leave them at 24c. Slightly low temperatures are less likely to do harm than too high temperatures. Feed them the night before you go and make sure they've eaten the crickets the day you leave. If they've not, remove the crickets. Dampen a corner of the substrate so they can hydrate as well. They should be fine. And have a nice holiday | |

| Thanks a lot Will try to get them to eat each night until I leave on Friday At this time of year it wont get over 30C so with the heat mat off I should not have a problem. | |

| Thanks to both of you At the moment the H jays are being kept at 32C daytime and 27 at night on dry coco fibre with a few dry leaves as hides I have been told to change them to a dry clay substrate instead Seem to be eating as the mini crickets disappear | |

| Nice! Thanks for the info. I've read they like the daytime temps up there nice and hot. It has to be in that range for them to molt properly. I see them on sand in a lot of pic searches. I've never heard of them burrowing, but sand/clay mix wouldn't hurt. I'm sure the dry coco fiber is just as good actually. I've been reading about where they come from...hot, dry, sandy and rocky. Do they hide all day? I'm going to try sand with some pebbles and maybe slate hides. I've been looking for the right container shape/size. I'll love to hear more as yours grows...I saw a video of one molting on it's back. | |

| I will keep you posted on all details. So far they are keeping under cover in the day time. Basically they are acting the same as my 2i A australis but they are not as hyperactive at night. | |

| Yeah...seems most reports are they are not super aggressive/defensive. They don't seem to be the most communal Hottentotta species, so I'm going to keep them individually...with supervised conjugal visits of course. Just a couple more weeks and temps should be good enough to ship here. | |

| I still have my two together and they snuggle up just fine!
May split them when they get a bit chubbier | |

| Right on. Be careful. Seems like half the stuff I read today was about gravid females chowing down on tank mates. They are just too rare here to risk using as feeders. If the breeding attempt works out I'll try some communal. | |

| These are only 2i. They run away from micro crickets | |
