Wheel Bugs? Empty
PostSubject: Wheel Bugs?   Wheel Bugs? Empty8/1/2012, 1:51 am

About four or five years my mom found a bug in her garden, caught it and gave it to me in a jar. I had no idea what it was and thought it was cool and that I would hang on to it for a while.

At the time (it was summer) we had an infestation of brown recluses. I could easily catch 10 a day if I wanted to and I had one in another jar already. I put the wheel bug inside with it. An hour later, I see the the recluse with its legs pulled all the way straight back, dead. I had no idea what happened. At the time Im pretty sure I thought all insects were herbivores aside from ants and wasps, so I was really surprised. I fed that bug maybe 5 or 6 more brown recluses and it sucked all of them dry.

I decided to let it go after that and I havent seen one since. I found out what it was not too long ago (exactly like the one in the pic below) and have read that its rare for them to be found in Kansas. I'd like to find another one and take care of it properly. Maybe I could purchase one from somewhere. Anyone have any info on where a good place to get one and how to care for it?

The african species get nice and big and have nice colours. I'm actually scared of them so never thought of keeping them. I find nice, big red ones with yellow spots in our garden

Nice assassins!

If you notice the rostrum ("feeding tube") doesn't go much past the head/leg region. I forget what it is exactly called, but you can tell Assassins apart from other insects with Rostrums this way. Some insects have extremely long rostrums.
