| Something i posted over at Parabuthus discussion thread a week ago: This is "THE" pre-molt position which i have observe in all my desert specimens which i would like to share. Refer to the picture below, as the actual day of molting draws near, while the metasomal is in a relax position. the pair of chela is bent more inwards to the Chelicera. Top View #1 Side View #2 A week later after the picture above was taken:#3 #4 #5

| GS, have you observed from which instar different desert specimens get bigger size increases with the molt?
What I have seen from A. bicolor and H. tamulus is that they don't grow very much until i4. Now the ones that are on premolt to 5th, look like they would grow a good bunch. Time will tell though.

| So far i have not religiously taken photos to document the size increase with each molt or i might have the pictures but have not allocated time to sort them out yet.. As of now, I would think it is dependent on the overall specie's size. E.g. Parabuthus transvaalicus, being one of the larger desert species, with each time it molts.. the size increase (say in terms of %) is "paved" in a way to reach the potential target adult size (say 12cm +/- for an 8.instar female). E.g. 2.instar to 3.instar = 20% size increase, 3.instar to 4.instar 40% size increase.. Hence, i'm always fascinated with their size increment each time they molts. Some pictures from my iphone: Needless to say, for desert scorpions belonging to classes of "smaller size" e.g. Androctonus bicolor with adult size of 7cm +/- , the size increase would not be that significant for our viewing. However, if we are talking about the FAT-tail that these little buggers are transforming to.. you will be quite happy with what you see in a 5.instar A.bicolor. Of cos, the ultimate is always the last molt. I look forward to your documentation bud.. especially H.tamulus

| Superb pics! The size increase on that transvaalicus is unbelievable. Do you remember how long 2i and 3i are usually apart? My 4i bicolor is definitely getting huge, will try to get updated pics during lunch break If it is to reach 7cm, it will have to gather a lot in the next 3 molts. | |

Do you remember how long 2i and 3i are usually apart? Thanks bud. Yeah that size increase was over 200% I was basically smiling non-stop during photo taking session when she finished molted then. I've done a check on my records, P.transvaalicus molting interval from 2.instar to 3.instar is about 40 days. It differs from specimen to specimen at times.

| As promised, here's a post-molt pic of the Parabuthus male. - 3i Parabuthus villosus "oranje morph":
106 days from birth to 3i. Unfortunately I don't have data on its molt to 2i. Size increase is pretty respectable!

It's a P. villosus. Not trans. Sorry for not mentioning that in my post.

| One of my Centruroides gracilis is molting. (It's almost done now) It looks about three times the size of what it was. The other one is in premolt. My camera is not working so well, but I'll try to get pics soon. | |
