Hi everyone, I just recently got a 1" Hadrurus Arizonensis online, and wow, he surprised me. I have only had one scorpion before this, an adult P. Imperator I got from PetCo. He died of a bad molt. I swear, I sprayed him 3 times a day, had a false bottom, and a water dish, and it was still usually below 70% (tends to be very dry in Alaska). That was ok for the 8 months up to his molt. Anyways, I also am currently caring for my first tarantula, an A. Hentzi that just had a flawless first molt, no extra moisture added. This gave me the idea to try my luck with a desert species. The H. Arizonensis seemed the perfect choice, so I decided to get one. To start everything off, he manages to escape from me when I first open his vial (I know, I should have opened it in his tank, but it seemed to work fine with T's). He was *extremely* fast, and got under my couch. affraid I managed to get him after a bit of moving things around, but it scared the hell out of me. I now have him in his tank, which is a 10 gallon with ~4 in of sand, (he's already digging away in his hide) a hide on both sides, (one a store bought log type, buried a bit, the other made out of rocks and dug out) a water dish which I will fill periodically, and a red heat bulb over one side. With the bulb on, the tank is at ~80 degrees F.

1. I hear that this species is prone to bad molts. How should I go about giving him moisture without over humidifying it?
2. He seems terrified of me, and even when he is out of his burrow, the second he hears a sound, he is back in (like I said, he's FAST. How should I go about feeding him without scaring him?
3. With my last scorp, I left the lamp on 24/7. I hear that this can cause stress for this species, so would I be better off turning it off at night? It gets down between the high 60's and low 70's.
4. I know this is probably impossible, but can they climb glass? With how fast and agressive he is, I have just had this paranoid thought in the back of my head that he's going to escape.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

2. Just simply drop a cricket or two in the tank every week after taking the two jumping legs off and he will be fine.

4. No, they cannot climb glass.

Ok Flam... I'll try best at suggesting some solutions, though I must say, I've only had a retrospective experience with Haddy's

1. I think this can be done, in the same approach to Scorpio maurus... a tube going down to the false bottom through which the water can applied directly to the bottom substrate layer without dousing the surface which should ideally remain dry. In this way you provide him with a choice range of conditions which is preferable.

2. You can never train a scorpion, but you can always train yourself. If your scorpion runs into its burrow the minute you approach... this is a good indication that your scorpion is healthy, all-aware albiet a bit skittish. If you want to observe behavior unobtrusively. I recommend sitting close to the tank and sitting as still as possible. They can pick up vibrations of your footsteps even from inside the tank.

4. They can't climb glass, no scorpions can, but if the push themselves with their tails up into an aquarium corner and make purchase with their pincers at the top... lets just hope the lid is on tight, gather?

Cheers all the best...l I hope that puts you at ease! lol

As usual Alex your advise is spot on.
Just to add on to Alex's suggestion making the substrate deeper if you can is always good,
Always provide it as deep as you can with these guys, that way they can find a perfect location to molt

the sting isnt bad either.
these are my favourite species of scorp, and there temperament varies from one to the other. when i walk into the room mine goes ultra aggro attack mode and looks like she is balancing on her claws! i have seen others in shops who dont leave their burrows at all. the water dish is unnecessary as long as its feeding. they get moisture from their food.
moulting, well thats difficult. you need a really deep substrate and just the right amount of moisture in the false bottom.
make sure the scorp cant get in the tube you fill it up with either. it should ideally go straight from the bottom to the lid in the tank so you can fill it up without opening the lid, but it depends on the container its in...

Thanks for the replies everyone. This makes me feel a lot better. He is actually starting to come out on occasion, and I plan to try to feed him tomorrow. Thanks again!
