New Emperor has a dodgy leg Empty
PostSubject: New Emperor has a dodgy leg   New Emperor has a dodgy leg Empty7/5/2014, 7:37 pm

Hi,

Sorry this has to be my first real post but i'm a little concerned.

Picked up my two new Emperors two days ago, they both seem to have settled in pretty well and both have eaten last night. However, the one i believe to be the female is carrying her rear right side leg in an odd position, as in up on her back. She is moving the leg as she walks and it isn't discoloured but she seems unable to put it down. Further to this she seems to have a bright red 'ball' at the base of the leg.
In the pet shop (which is a reputable one rather than a shady back street dive) had a bright red substrate type sand in the vivarium they were kept in which he told me was some kind of nutrient additive. I therefore thought it would be some of the dust stuck to it and it would brush of as she walked across the coco fibre in her new home.

Two days later and it shows no sign of shifting. I did see on the coco fibre that some of the red dust seems to have brushed off as i expected but nowhere near enough to make me feel at ease.

I'll attach some images and hopefully someone can tell me if it's more serious than i thought or if it's possibly a wound that'll heal on it's own.

Thanks

Lee

It looks like the sand has cemented it self on their pretty well. Give her a nice soaking and get back to us with this emergency.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The sand has come off but has left her carrying her leg at an odd angle. She's carrying it high so the "foot" doesn't actually touch the ground, however she uses it when climbing over her terrain if the uneven surface is at the right height for the legs position.

I'm baffled and hoping it won't cause issues on her next molt.

The odd leg angle is clear to see on this image, she's the one on the right

Wow, can't believe I didn't see this before.

It appears as though it injured itself somehow. Probably by attempting to climb something then falling. As long as her behavior is normal I wouldn't worry about it too much. The leg doesn't appear to be deformed in any way, so it should straighten out when it molts.

As above.

If it's any consolation, I have a scorpion that was found in a packet of bed linen from a large home ware chain here in the UK and handed over to me via the RSPCA and a reptile shop. The poor thing had taken a battering, presumably as she travelled around the globe in a plastic packet Shocked , and has four and a half legs left. The scorpion still copes pretty well considering its condition and has been with me for over a year now.

Thanks for the replies guys.

She moves about fine from what I've seen. The set up in the pet shop I bought them from did have a rock effect sides in the enclosure so it could well be from an attempted climb and fall. Fingers crossed it all sorts itself out during the next molt. I just worry as many years ago i lost two young emps through a molt, I was less educated back then though. Hence why I come here to ask and learn.

Thanks again for all advice
