Subject: How to List Your Inverts! 11/14/2010, 1:04 am
Hi guys/gals,
I've noticed lately that many members, including myself, have started listing their inverts and various animals they are keeping in the signature section.
I decided to make this thread in order to assist any member in making their list because I've received help on it too and I think it's pretty neat to our forum. If you don't know where to go to tamper with your signature, click on Profile at the top and click on the Signature tab. I will be using my list for the examples and hopefully someone will get some use out of this thread
Before going into the lists, I'll explain what those 0.0.0 numbers mean. It is a basic method of showing the sexes of your specimens. The first digit in 0.0.0 refers to how many males you have of that species. The second 0.0.0 refers to the number of females and the third digit 0.0.0 refers to the number of specimens that are unsexed or where the sex is unknown. For example: 1.0.0 = 1 male 0.1.0 = 1 female 0.0.1 = 1 unknown sex 1.1.0 = 1 male 1 female
Now time for the lists:
First up is the Standard List for Inverts. As you can see, it's a basic display of my inverts with different color schemes of choice.
Second up is what I'm calling The Invert Box . I learned this off of DLP (many thanks) and thought it was a pretty clever idea to list your inverts without taking up much room because I know many of us addicts have a long list of inverts
Just copy that entire code and work off of it. After entering your bugs, you can try it out and click preview to see if it looks the way you want. You don't have to use all of the lines, so you can delete them if you wish. If you have more critters, just type up another line and add your critter in.
The important part to make it work is to delete any of the spaces in between the signs " < "and " > " They're those spaces in between < option and < /option> of almost every line, so you want to get them all. There's also one in the last line < /select> and at the top < select This will make the whole code work.
Third up (but certainly not the last) is the Scrolling List of Inverts. I learned this one from Aviculor and it's one that I'm quite fond of, so I stuck with it It's very simple to do and produces very nice results.
Here's what it looks like:
Here's how you do it:
All you do is type [ updown ] before and [ /updown ] after your list of inverts. If you want to have a heading for your list so it isn't included in the scrolling, simply type up the title of the list such as "My Inverts" and put it before/above the [ updown ] code. This way it will stay static and not scroll. Make sure to delete the spaces you see in [ updown ] and in [/updown ] for it to work--it's that simple! You can customize your list with whatever colors you want as well, so be creative!
These three methods are by no means the only ways to show off your inverts, so any suggestions and new ideas are welcomed and appreciated.
I have also found that changing the size of fonts to "small" is a good way of saving space in your signature. It works especially well for the scrolling invert list because it takes less time for the scrolling and allows more viewing of your list.
I believe this trend that has started is a great way to bring our members together and opens new ideas and ways for sharing what we love Enjoy!

Thanks! I've already noticed a few members implementing the lists
It's funny you should mention the numbers because I was just thinking about doing that today. I'll put it in the post now.

Ha, nice post I saw DLPs drop down list and loved it, thought I'd get all creative and do a vertical marquee and then noticed like 4 other cats on here doing it before I updated mine. So I did the regular/horizontal scrolling marquee. May as well share the secret to that as well, heck with it. I'll just get the 1+ bug and try to add in some AJAX or something later lol!! Stand by for my example code should any none html savy individuals want yet another fancy option. Also notice the tag for some old school web bling

BTW I'm a little bummed that the on mouse over property for the marquee tag doesn't work on here Oh well, can't have everything can we!

Sticky granted.
DLP, does your box / scrolling thingy work for you? I just see a huge list, which means I'll have to edit your signature to make it comply with the rules . . .

Sweet, thanks Mordax DLP's list is the invert box method, but now that I'm looking at my post for what it's supposed to look like, something went wrong with it and it's just a coded list now. Hmm.

Yeah, the drop down box doesn't work anymore on the first post. It worked before...oh well.

I have also added a "wish-list" along with my list containing what invertibrates I'm looking for! Thinking that if people do that, it might make it easier to find people who's looking for what you got to sell! Just a suggestion

DLP, could you switch yours to the scrolling type? Otherwise I'll have to trim your signature down.

Is DLP over the limit? I noticed if I add anymore to my scrolling sig I am over the limit. I'm curious as I did like the drop down control and was thinking of other possibilities but was curious exactly what the limitations are here?

DLP's list looks fine to me, it's probably something to do w/ our software.

I was thinking it was limited by the amount of text, when you code out the drop down list box control it takes a little more code than the marque html code. Although the more formatting you do, color variation, flashing text, etc it adds on a lot of code/text too. That would be my guess but I'm not sure how the forum works under the hood.

go to the 1st page of this post and look for my post, the code snippet generates in red. You can copy the whole thing and manipulate it. I put it all inline because if I formatted it for easy reading it says my sig is too long. I'll see if I can whip it up on here and posted it in a more readable format but you would be better off when actually copying your tweaked version to put it back in the inline format as in my previous example. Does this make sense?
If you want to read a little bit on it the html tag is called marque. Here's a quick link to check out. Otherwise just google 'html, marque'

The only user on this page with a scrolling marquee sig that I see is H. Laoticus -- everyone else is well over the five-line limit of a conventional signature.
(Checks to see if it's just Firefox -- shoot!)
Ok, H. Laoticus has a VERTICAL scrolling signature visible in Firefox and IE -- everyone else with the horizontall scrolling signature is visible in IE but not explorer.
Folks, could you switch to the vertical format? That would allow for as many lines of text as you want.

Pff, the sideways-scrolling signatures work on my phone. Can anyone else using Firefox view them?
