| well my scorpion has been looking healthy and eating and doing its normal scorpion thing and for some reason he started acting all jump like if he's scared of everything he's even scared of the crickets he won't eat all he does is sit in way back of his cave he made and turn into a ball and block himself with his claws. Everytime I take him out he starts jumping everywhere and having his tail up ready to sting something but there is no there in his tank but him and a couple of mites that hang near the water dish. (none are on him I've checked) and he when he touches the wall of the tank he jumps back and tries to pinch it or climb it. . . Kind of weird. . any help please? | |

| Why are you "taking him out"? Emps normally spend 95% of the time hidden in their burrows. Prior to a molt, they will stop eating and stay out of sight. The last time mine molted, I didn't see it for two weeks. It's also not unusual for them to stop eating for weeks and even months at a time for no real reason. I would just leave it alone and offer it a cricket once or twice a week. When it's hungry, it will eat. | |

| firstly welcome to the forum if your getting him out that often he is more than likely very stressed have you got his tank set up correctly as this can cause a great deal of stress if its not done right you should have 4-6 inches of moist cocoa fiber some hides, a water dish a heat sorce preferably an infrared heat lamp (infrared bulbs are the only safe bulb to use) or a heat matt attached to the back side of the tank (never underneathe the tank ) scorps burrow to escape heat and if the heat sorce is coming from below the substrate your likely to get a steamed cooked scorpion. try not to disturb it too much handeling is not recomened due to most scorpions finding it quite stresssful. have you ot the temps and humidity correct...corps can act very strange when they are too hot | |

| I don't take him out much its only the 3rd time ive taken him out to clean the tank and after and I've only clean once a month.
I believe i do have it right 5 inch of cocoa fiber, water dish, and humidity is fine 80-90
But when i put him back in the tank after im done cleaning he doesnt bother to go in his cave i put him in front of it and he just freaks out and runs to a corner and stays there. . .

| Explain to your parents that scorpions produce very little waste and don't need to have their tanks cleaned or substrate replaced on a regular basis. New substrate every 6 months to a year is more than sufficient.
You should, of course, always remove any uneaten prey items after feeding. Since you mentioned mites, you might consider adding some isopods (also called woodlice, sow bugs, roly-polys) to your tank. They make good tank cleaners, feeding on any uneaten prey items you miss, and should help with the mites.
75F is a little cold for an Emperor. They do much better at around 85F.
Also, welcome to the forum.

| Um, yeah, I only clean my emp tank every 6 months, if that. Cleaning it that often only serves to stress the scorpion. +1 to everything that shebeen said. 75 is a little bit on the low side, but they still do fine at that temp. to the forum by the way. | |

| he will be if your taking him out regulary and changing the tank around or destroying burrows constantly...... we try to make there environments as close to nature as possible they would not be being dug up constanly, and messed about with in the wild so why do it in captivity, stress can seriously shorten a scorpions life span, you dont even need to remove it to clean the most you would need to do is spot clean (pick out any left over food or poop) thats all, no need to move him at all | |
