| Spray it until the water starts to show in the substrate on the bottom of the tank. Let it sit for a minute and check the bottom again. It should have spread toward the center a bit. do this until the entire bottom shows moisture. This way it won't take a month to dry fully. | |

| Make sure you mix the sand up in a bucket or something matey, don't want to scratch your new enclosures. Got to just be a little careful packing the sand down around the edges or better yet what I done was a very thin layer of coco fibre around the edge so the sand doesn't actually touch the sides, sounds awkward but it'll be worth it when you come to re-use the tank.
Get the sand/ex clay mix moist throughout, don't make it "wet" or you'll have quite a wait on your hands to dry it all out, on the other hand not too dry because when it dries out it will still be pretty lose and won't hold a burrow well. Just keep adding a bit at a time until it's moist throughout, this takes some trial and error really but your better off making it slightly too wet than not dry enough on a first attempt. | |

| Yeah. Premix it with your sand outside the tank, then put it in dry, this also helps to avoid scratches if you have an acrylic enclosure. Once you spray it a bit you can sculpt it if you want. In my experience they just dig it all up anyway, so I usually just bury the hides and leave a little crack for them to find, they take care of the rest. | |

| Best way to dry it out I've found is a lamp above it to draw the moisture out. Just don't rest a lamp on the sand because that cracks tanks Me being impatient. | |

| It's Zoo Med excavator clay. Here's a link so you know what it looks like.
It should be mixed with sand so it doesn't dry rock hard. I do about 1 part clay to 3 parts sand. This gives it enough structure that burrows will be solid, but it's soft enough that they can dig.
You can also use regular sculpting clay that they sell at art stores. not the modeling clay that doesn't dry, but the stuff you fire in a kiln for pottery. Usually this comes wet and ready to mold, so what you do is make clay water. Basically you dissolve the clay in a bucket of water and then use the clay water to wet down your sand.
Also you can let the pottery clay dry out and crush it into powder, then mix it into your sand and wet it down.
This is fun! | |
