Subject: Clay question 10/15/2014, 9:39 am
Hello everyone. I'm a little new here :-)
I have just got into scorpions the last few months. So far I have desert and bark scorpions. I also have 1 flatrock (H. paucidens).
I am aquireing a couple H. arizonensis next month. So far I know everything I need but I have one problem. I need clay. I have 2 other desert species that has the clay from the pet store mixed in with treated play sand to make burrows. However that clay is fairly expensive. Is there another type of clay I can use for the desert hairys besides the excavator clay from petsmart?
Also. I'm going to be using 10 gallon aquariums for them. I have 2 scorps arriving. So what percentage of sand and clay should I use?
Thanks in advance!

I've not got time to search before work, but there is a thread with the title along the lines of Hadrurus arizonensis substrate, that has a great post by a member called Den on how to use sculpting clay or something similar.
If you can't find it, I'll have a look later.

I've never used myself before but apparently you can mix some bentonite powdered clay with normal sand as an excavator alternative. I think you can get it from hobby stores.

Well I am experimenting with Crayola clay that comes in 5 gallon tubs. I use 10 lbs of that mixed with 50lbs of play sand from Home Depot. I finely mixed both with water to see if it will work. I have not been home in 2 days and I have a high wattage heat bulb drying it out. About to see how well it has worked out so far when I get home. Some people said that they have used Air dry clay from craft stores fom their scorpion. I found some by Crayola only. One of my 10 gallons has 7" of sand and clay mixture.
On my second 10 gallon enclosure I am going to use the pet store excavator clay instead.

Yeah I've always just used the pet shop ZooMed stuff, it is a bit pricey but you really don't need to add much of it to normal sand to make it dry out pretty hard.
