Introducing Emps to eachother? Empty
PostSubject: Introducing Emps to eachother?   Introducing Emps to eachother? Empty1/13/2011, 7:39 pm

If I were to buy another Emperor, and introduce it into the tank that my other Emp is already occupying, would there be any risks I should be aware of?

I know cannibalism can occur at any point but would be there any sort of territorial issues and scrapping?

Size isn't an issue, it's a large tank, and I keep my scorpions well fed so I doubt there would be much competition over food. I just want to know if this is a bad idea?

If you plan to introduce another emp you will need to remove the one you have now give the tank a substrate change (to remove any scent of original) move everything about and then put them back in together this should stop any territorial issues from your original scorp,(it shouldnt recognise it as its home) also you need to make sure there is enough hides for both (maybe one extra) you will prly still get a few fights and stuff but these usually calm down once they are settled again.
Also you need to make sure the scorps are of simular size if you put a juvi with and adult it will get killed.

But all in all emps are quite good to keep together, one more thing you should be aware of though if you have a female and she is gravid you will need to seperate as gravid females get very ratty and will just kill its room mate. hope this helps! Smile

Thanks for that Bex. I kinda had a feeling he wouldn't respond well to a juvi, I said this in the pet shop near me because the only Emp they had in was a juvi, and the bloke said it'd be like pitting David against Goliath again, except David wouldn't win, he'd be a bloody mess.

Considering I just moved him into his new tank a few days ago I think I'll wait a few months before buying another Emp. I'll concentrate on a lone H. Arizonensis for the time being.

Thanks for the info though I'll keep it all in mind when I buy another. Very Happy

You don't necessarily have to change the substrate, but shifting it all around does seem to help.

Oh I read somewhere to be completely sure to elimate any possible territorial issues to change the substrate, so you don't have to then, we plan to get 2 emps to go in with our female soon now it's been a while since her last friend died, gonna get another female and and one male, be good if we don't have to change the substrate though Smile

I've just stirred things up to eliminate the familiar landscape and disrupt any pheromones (in all likelihood, only on the surface layer or on substrate lining burrows). Never had any fighting problems in my collections.
