| Hey guys, got my second scorpion about a month ago (first one was about a decade ago). Its the common emperor scorpion and I love the crap out of him. Now I come to you all with a certain issue, I might be paranoid but I can't find anything about this anywhere else. My scorpion has a strange discoloration its like a light brownish rust on his tail. Is this some sort of sickness, or is it just from running around in the substrate and the tail not coming into contact with the water or something but I'm afraid it's the former. I can't provide any pictures right now as i just tried stroking his tail with a small unused water color brush (its super thin and soft) dipped in water to see if maybe that would help.
As for everything else hes eating very healthily about 10 large crickets a week (is that overfeeding), and is generally pretty active late into the night as well. Can anyone give me some info on this?

| Possibly feces on the tail and the substrate sticking on it?
I don't believe there's such thing as overfeeding because your scorpion will stop eating when it's time for a break. Your scorpions seems like a healthy specimen to me, but we'll see with the pictures.

| and It disappeared after I scrubbed it gently with the wet brush, but just a few hours later its all back; It has me pretty worried alright. Also to add to this little problem, I've been starting to notice that my scorpion doesn't have as shiny of a carapace as most other pictures of emperor scorpions I see around; I'll put more pictures in a little bit. | |

| It definitely looks like buildup, but I doubt it's harmful to your scorpion. It could be clay from its previous home--did you buy it with the stains, all ready?
Was its carapace shiny before or was it already like that? It could very well have been the conditions it was in prior to being purchased. Usually wild caught scorpions have buildup of clay/dirt and keepers may also have used hard tap water (sprayed them) which stains the exoskeleton of the scorpion over time.

| I thought they only needed to be fed 3/4 times a week (maybe every other day) so i would say ten large crickets per week is def overfeeding....but if you dont mind having a fat scorpion go ahead lol it prob wont hurt them Oh and welcome to the forum! | |

| Yea, you can feed em as long as they'll take it, there has yet to be a case where a scorpion has been over fed from my experience. but 10 a week makes yours a fatty for sure. | |

Was its carapace shiny before or was it already like that? I'm not so certain if he did; I think his carapace was always a bit dull, I'll have some photos as soon as the sun comes out and i have better lighting. - Quote :

Oh and welcome to the forum! I wouldn't really mind if he turned out to be quite chubby, probably would enjoy a more docile scorpion myself lol; and thank you! I do plan to lurk around here quite often from now on. :p

| Sorry for getting back so late guys, here are some pictures. I think heres a decent shot at the back end of his carapace, It might just be me but it seems rather dull. Heres another one, pretty good news I believe. Although he still has quite a bit of the staining throughout the the tail and legs, its not as much as it used to be; he actually spent a night in the water dish with the bottom half of his body submerged and it seemed to have washed off plenty of it. I also hope thats not unusual behavior, I try to keep a very close watch on his temperature and humidty levels. | |
