| Cheers iitomodachi and yes its that zoo-med excavator clay mixed with normal sand. I think the key to sand holding good burrows is getting it wet, packing it down and drying it out in the tank. Im drying out the new haddy tank at the mo, i'v put a heat mat underneath and a heat bulb hanging inside the tank to draw the moisture out. Don't put the bulb too close to the sand or glass though cause i cracked a tank doing this being impatient. It does take an age to dry, you can see the dry line slowly going down. I'd say they'd only want a moisture gradient in the substrate if they're due to molt otherwise they're susceptible to mycosis. | |

| Nice looking scorpion, Jamie. It still looks healthy and fed after a month of hiding I like the substrate as well and it's great that it can hold burrows. I tried my own mix once and it ended up hard as stone, haha. What's the ratio of excavator clay to sand? If I ever own one again I will do it your way. | |

| If this is the only enclosure you are using the excavator sand for I would just use 100% unless someone on here with more experience has a good reason not to. I thought nixing was because the zoo med stuff was so pricey. That is my assumption though. | |

| As JamieLawrence pointed out, it gets too hard with only the excavator sand (or even 50/50 as he said), so that's why you mix it 80/20! |

| Cheers H. Laoticus, she actually looks fatter than when I last saw her. Right, definatly don't use all excavator clay, as iitomodachi says it would work out super expensive and even 50/50 comes out rock hard. As others have said 80/20 seems to work well, that 20% clay just seems to help it stay together better. Also if you don't have the sand wet enough in the first place it will still dry loose. There's really no shortcut to get the sand hard like actual ground but still burrow away easily and stay like it other than getting it wet, packing it down and drying out properly. Its took upto a week to dry for me before. As you say Bex, get a temp tank or tub set up with just loose dry sand and a couple of hides till you get the main tank sorted, it'll be fine. Haddy guarding her burrow thats now dug up with a tea spoon lol she done this in 50/50 with mycosis! | |

| Right scorps here .... yay Excavator sand came today too have mixed it 20/80 and added boiling water (in the hope it would dry quicker lol) have started putting it down in inch layers and using a hairdryer to dry it a bit before adding next layer....hairdryer seems to be working ok and as its mixed with the clay its not blowing it all over the place as before...... will update once finished | |
