New Emperor Scorpion owner. Empty
PostSubject: New Emperor Scorpion owner.   New Emperor Scorpion owner. Empty7/2/2010, 1:02 am

So, I have a friend that is selling Emperor Scorpions, And I heard they are the best to start the hobby. I have no Idea whatsoever to what i should use for them. Im thinking of buying a 5-10 gallon tank, but im wondering if i should buy more then one scorpion? Don't want him getting lonely or anything aye?

But anyways, I looked in the guides to scorpions and found nothing directly on African/Emperor Scorpions. Do they have a different more Scientific name? What stuff should I buy? I live in Arizona, and I want to let them have natural sunlight, so im thinking of keeping them by my window.

The Scorpions he has are about 2 months old, and i have no idea in heck what to feed young scorpions, I heard feed them insects that are no bigger then there claw, but there claws are microscopic. So give them a lady bug? I have absolutely no clue whatsoever. I need to find out exactly what would be the best environment for them, and What assets they would enjoy. I have about $70 to spend on them.

Overall, I am a Noobie to this hobby, and I want to make the best home I can for these scorpions. Any advice will be helpful. Many thanks. geek

Welcome to both the forum and the hobby cheers

5-10 gallon tank will be enough for no more than two emperors. I'd recommend getting a pair to observe the communal behaviour as its far more interesting than when they're on their own.

If you get a pair, it will have to be either two females, or a male and a female (the male you would ave to separate from her if the female were to get gravid) {pregnant}.

There are many species of scorpion in Africa, but the scientific name for emperors is Pandinus Imperator.

Don't keep them by the window. They are negatively phototactic meaning they don't like light of any sort. As long as they are kept in a room where the room looks brighter when the curtains are open or whatever, then they will be fine - But keep them out of direct sunlight.

He can only say that they are about two months old if he has bred them himself.

Crickets, locust and roaches are the most common feeders. I like to stick with crickets and the occasional locust.
Just small crickets will be fine for them to eat.

As for the environment, I'll leave for someone else to answer as I'm running a bit short on time.

Thanks for the reply sir, really helpful. I just need to find out a way to tell the sex, my friend has them, but he doesn't know how to tell it, nor do I. Thankyou again Binksyboy3.

No problem. Smile

You can sex them by placing them in a clear plastic container and taking pics of their undersides, specifically the pectines (wing/feather like things).

Simply load them up on here and we can sex it/them for you Smile

NB: The pictures will have to be as clear as you can possibly get them.
