Gravid Emperors?? Empty
PostSubject: Gravid Emperors??   Gravid Emperors?? Empty12/31/2008, 7:08 pm

I got 2 female emperors, and to my eye, they seem to be fattening without being overfed, they don't come out at night like my other scorpions. Once while feeding them, I saw some aggressivity, so I'm starting to think one or both are gravid. I'm starting to think about isolating the biggest one this weekend. Here are a few pictures, tell me what you think.

It's impossible to tell with large forest scorpions unless they're getting close . . . and yours aren't getting close.

How long have you had them? When was the last time they were with males?

Not coming out at night doesn't really mean anything. When they're settled in, they hardly ever leave their burrows.

i bought them the beginning of november, they were communaly kept in a pet shop, there were males in there I guess, they were 12 or something like that they said. I added a male a month later. They looked skinnier when I bought them

Then it's quite probable, but it's impossible to tell how soon it will be before they pop.

Emphasis on probable -- I think I'm the only person who had a WC female emperor for over a year that wasn't gravid.

At first, I thought they were overfed from the pet shop, so I started feeding them every two weeks. To my surprise, they didn't slim down, they have gotten slighty bigger, so that's why I'm wondering.

Is it too early to isolate them?? I'm preparing myself to have them in separate tanks if there gravid.

Use your own judgment for that. I'd be paranoid and separate them early, but some people have had females birth in community tanks without a problem -- they just removed the tankmates instead.

stop feeding her. if she continues you get bigger then she is gravid. If she slims down...then she isnt.

My unknown to me gravid pandinus imperator refused food. Ate one small bit and then totally refused until all of a sudden she had babies on her back to my shock! this was about 4 months of fasting

Females also become agressive, more so then this type of scorpion would be.

When I got my male and female way back when! they both looked the same! I only knew who was who by sexing them from underneath! he was obvious as she was too due to the HUGE size difference!
They both would feed weekly! 2 hoppers, maybe 2 crickets or 2 locusts each!
THEN! on the 13th October 2007 the male was just dead.
She didnt feed for 2 months. Then she ate a cricket and didnt feed for 4 months. in this time she just got bigger and bigger and agressive. But as she was my first scorpion I kept asking people and no one knew...and then randomly on the 5th Feb 2008 she gave birth to 19 scorplings
I have a thread in the breeding section and also a section called Scorplings in this area for your reading pleasue and all the questions to be answered Very Happy

Now she was BIG and did look like she was going to BURST open but still nothing happened and I was told to wait it out. Now ive had a het female birth and she was HUGE, ive never seen such a huge scorpion! and she gave birth a week after me owning her and she birthed with a tank make in the tank and under the hide with her!!! but she had 32 scorplings!!!!

So wait it out. But the best way I found out was refusing food, becoming agressive and also didnt really come out anymore at night. before she and the male would always come out at 11pm and after he died she didnt...only maybe 3 times a month for about 2 minutes

so...wait it out....if she refuses food, but still gets bigger and becomes agressive...she might very well be gravid!

Maybe she's about to molt, but I guess she would stop eating also. That wouldn't explain her sudden aggressivity. I guess I'll have to wait some more, I doubt she will give birth in the following weeks, but I just don't want to be caught by surprise with her and the other emperors with the babies.

No one's going to molt; both your girls are adults.

I put a cricket in her separate enclosure ( she's alone now ) she didn't eat it, took it out today. She looks bigger. I'll try again next week to see what happens.
