Hi everybody! I have had three adult Emperors for almost a year now, sharing the same large enclosure.
On 4/4/14 we woke up to find the babies, which my fiance and I couldn't be happier about except for one thing - we are getting married and leaving for Europe on Monday, 4/14/14 for two weeks. I almost wish they had been born RIGHT before we left, then maybe they would just be dropping off her back when we returned.
So here's my concern. The babies could be eaten by the others (i could pull the other two adults out for the time being.) But more importantly, if mom isn't well fed, we risk HER eating them. I had been keeping them all well fed, knowing they would be fine for two weeks without food (water replenishes automatically) but now with the babies, I can't risk mom fasting for two weeks.
The only solution I can think of is to find someone to feed mom regularly while we are gone. I have found someone, but not local. I need to bring her to them. I have a tank set up for her and the babies (then just the babies once they come off). I DO NOT know how to move her, and worry that relocating her will cause stress and lead to cannibalism even if conditions are right. I have even gone to measures to match temp and humidity levels exactly, but still fear moving her from one tank to another.
Maybe someone will have some insight, as I can't find a perfect solution. Every option has it's risk.
