PostSubject: Newly adopted Tenegaria   Newly adopted Tenegaria Empty5/22/2012, 7:50 pm

So the gf called me into the bathroom to deal with a visitor, lol.
But first, a prologue: local BC bylaws prohibit the keeping of any native species as pets (although let's face it - nobody will call the Mounties on you for keeping a spider in a jar). The Teganarias, though, are introduced from Europe and, like bullfrogs here, are considered a "kill on sight" invasive species. So I can keep her in a jar totally guilt-free. Smile
Since I couldn't bring myself to obliterate her, this girl now resides in a former false widow enclosure in the living room. She's already moulted once (and gotten a fair bit larger already), and is a ravenous eater. The whole jar is now elaborately webbed up in a series of levels and tunnels. I'm going to guess she's a Tenegaria domestica, since she's doesn't seem as gangly-looking as Tegenaria duellica, and I really don't think we have the infamous Tegenaria agrestis here.
All in all, she's far more interesting to keep and observe than the false widow, who as pretty as she was, didn't do much but hide up near the lid almost completely out of sight.

Nice looking Tenegaria. Smile
I need to get back into keeping "true" spiders.

Just to throw another picture up. I've been feeding this beast with houseflies mostly, and I threw in an extra cricket the other day that the scorpions didn't seem to want.
She was on it in seconds, dragging it around like it was nothing.
Over the next 48 hours, she kept coming back to it and eventually dismembered it.
I love what a fast, aggressive hunter she is.

She's moulted again since the last photo, plus getting fattened up from the cricket, so she looks a fair bit larger.
