On a Google search I came across an old post by yourself wherein you discussed the pros and cons of keeping Vaejovis spinigerus in a community setting. I do believe the results of this have never truly been answered!

I myself have successfully secured the necessary varied and estranged grouping of aforementioned species.

My Dear Mr. Mordax, what have you to say...Communal or non-communal!

I'm going to say non-communal. My own experiment ended in two cannibalistic occurrences.

I had five of them in a 2.5 gallon enclosure with plenty of hiding spots (large pieces of cork bark). One large female ate two of her tankmates.

HOWEVER! Note that it was a single, large, gravid (as later discovered) female responsible for the eatings of her fellow scorpions. I imagine a communal habitat would be more successful if all occupants were approximately the same size and none were gravid females.

My Dear Mr. Mordax,

Five of this particular species in a 2.5 enclosure? Are you out of your [EDIT](dont ask)?

I just recently secured 5 of these and I really like them. They act the way someone who truly wants to observe scorpions should act...Sometimes out during the day, sometimes hiding. They are a fast moving scorpion but can spend a long time basking on a structure so that you're able to observe them.

I do believe if you had tried this experiment using a 20 gallon long you would have had more favorable results.

Oh, and BTW, on Sunday I spent a good portion of the day perusing all the headings within Arachnoboards and I came across a category wherein people would submit pictures of themselves so other posters would know what you look like. Needless to say I ultimately came across your post and I'll just say this --- Either you should be in a cubicle somewhere updating bank software for the 2000 switch or you belong to the music group Beck!

Congrats Buggs, you've earned a language infraction. Very Happy

As for thinking I was keeping them in an improper density, that 2.5 gallon enclosure was roughly 1/2 the dimensions of a 10 gallon -- i.e., about 12" x 4" x 6". Considering each scorpion was at MOST 1" long, that is PLENTY of room.

The volume/scorp corresponds to about 1/2 gallon each. Considering that the largest scorpions are recommended to have 5 gallons each, that assumes a size difference of about 10 times between these guys and emps or Heterometrus spp. While most emps are less than 10", they are certainly more than ten times as massive as a diminutive Vaejovis spinigerus, so my scorp:volume scaling wasn't all that bad.

I just have to ask, what in the world is wrong with software engineers? I myself made the switch from construction and running a martial arts school. Slightly offended there!

As for the topic on hand, I would agree that they are not communal.

I tried 3 in a 10 gallon tank and they got on fine. I had 7 hides and they ate just fine. My males telson was found one day however Sad I did end up with 2 gravid females so that could be the cause but my observations are that scorpions come in 3 varieties, ones that are not communal at all and don't tolerate the site of another scorp other than breeding purposes, scorps that are arguably communal, they get a long if they have enough space and food but it is more tolerating rather than a community so should be classified as non-communal such as H. Spinigerus. And those that are communal such as H. Spinnifer who will hunt together take care of their young to 3i and beyond and will actively protect each other.
Again that is my theory.

As for talking trash, I know the Admins can take care of this but come on it is not necessary. Really it does nothing but get others worked up like myself and it reflects poorly more often than not on yourself rather than your target. And frankly I like this community and forum and don't want it wrecked. We all get ticked at someone but if that is the case use pm and still remain tactful, no reason for trash talking.

And Mike, I love the break down! As the others said, it was only short time before you showed up with a logical breakdown only Engineers can offer Very Happy
