Swimming pool? Empty
PostSubject: Swimming pool?   Swimming pool? Empty12/5/2012, 3:24 pm

Ive heard of people putting "swimming pool areas" in their emp's tanks. Is this practical and safe? Does anyone have experience with this? And how do you do this in a safe manner? Thanks guys!

I've heard people say their emps will soak in a large water bowl but I don't think anyone means they should have a bowl deep enough to literally swim in. I use a rough, natural type bowl that they can climb in. The water level is maybe 1/2 the depth of the height of the scorps. I have never seen mine soaking in the bowl.

Emps will sometimes submerge themselves completely for extended periods of time.
I have heard of some Pandinus and Heterometrus sp staying submerged for over half an hour. I've seen my own emp stay submerged for almost 20 minutes once. This is due to that scorpions have the ability to close their spiracles. (If you're unfamiliar, scorpions breathe by taking in air through eight opening under their body called spiracles, which then has the oxygen pulled out of it once it gets to the book lungs).

I see nothing wrong with making a "swimming area", just make sure they can get out. Also, the water shouldn't be too deep, no more than a few inches. There's about a million ways to do it, so I'm not going to specify. Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures somewhere on this forum, you might want to do a search.

And sure enough, 2 minute search revealed these: https://scorpionforum.darkbb.com/t5104-pandinus-imperator-communal-enclosure-with-a-pool

I'm sure there's some on other forums, and I know several people have tried this with H. gigas with success.

I wonder if emps ever take prey under water? Small fish, etc.
