Communal Living Empty
PostSubject: Communal Living   Communal Living Empty9/29/2012, 10:14 pm

Right now my three Emps are sharing a burrow. They've excavated heavily, yet I only ever see one at the entrance of the hide. His (He's the only male) claws are the biggest and easy to distinguish. When feeding, should I be worried about the other two not eating?

Do scorpions 'pass' food along when they live in a communal burrow like that? This question was prompted when feeding today because he took all three prey items in short succession. He didn't really have time to eat them, so I'm wondering if they do this when living together.

This was him grabbing the second prey item.

This was him grabbing the last.

I can't find any sign of the other two crickets as I searched. Thanks!

Have you tried coaxing him out of the burrow entrance and then sending some crickets down into the burrow?

Also, is the burrow the only hide available for them? There should be multiple hides for them so that they can stake out a territory of their own.

There are three separate hides, in different parts of the tank. When I introduced them, they spread out to the other hides, each claiming their own. Over the first few days they migrated into the one.

They did heavy excavating, because for three days, their water dish (which is about six inches from that hide) became fouled with substrate that I had to change ti daily.

As for coaxing them out, I cannot. Not without destroying the hide. I'll try to get some pictures after work.

They all probably chose that hide because the conditions are the best at that specific hide. You can always just add more hides in that spot.
