Help! Injured Tarantula Empty
PostSubject: Help! Injured Tarantula   Help! Injured Tarantula Empty9/29/2012, 4:05 pm

Hello everyone!

I was driving with the family and found a presumably dead tarantula in the middle of the road. I had never seen a tarantula in the wild and wanted to stop and check him out. That is when I realized he was not dead at all but injured pretty badly on two of his legs (the milky stuff on his leg joints is visible in the attached pics). I decided right then and there to take him and try to figure out how to help this creature. He was trying to get all karate on me with his front legs but I got him into the container as gently as I could. He is defensive but when not being disturbed he seems pretty chill. I have two questions.

1. What now? Any recommendations on what to do next as far as food, water, shelter, injury assessment?

2. What type of tarantula is he? Hopefully i can google his species if someone here can help I.D. him.

Thanks!!!

FYI we found him in rural Curry County NM. I am not from this area and have no background knowledge at all on these guys. I have lived here for a few years though and this is the first one I have ever seen.

Look almost like an A.chalcodes probably male. Put super glue or cornstarch on the wounds...keep him in a container with moist (not soaking) paper towels...room temp and leave him in a dark place for several hours

Thank you Ludedor, unfortunately he didn't make it much longer after I posted. There was suddenly alot of thin yellowish liquid last time I checked on him and he was unresponsive. I am now extremely intrigued now however and plan to research the tarantulas in this area more extensively. From the time I found him in the road to his last check was about only 2 hours. I must have found him shortly after his injury.

Sorry to see that...... RIP

I was going to suggest offering a bottlecap of water while it was in the ICU, but....
