| You can not use sand for Emps. They need a substrate that can hold humidity well, and can be handled easily because they are a burrowing scorpion. Coco fiber is the most common and best choice for an Emp tank.
I don't know much about the other species, but I believe that Desert Hairys are a good sand based substrate scorpion for a beginner. I want one...

| You really should read up on anything you want to keep as a pet beforehand.
Your not gonna want sand because they're not a desert species. The sand wont let them burrow like they would want and they'd just be forced to live under a rock. Emperor's can create some intricate tunnels that sand wont allow.
As for a desert species I couldn't tell you because I don't own any but a rainforest/tropical design can also be awesome. We have a user here named Bex who has an enclosure for her Emperors (which I believe are 3) that is close to a rainforest version of what you want with skulls and tunnels and what not.
Please just be sure to properly do what they need and read up. We have a caresheet section on the forum.

| Welcome to the forum looks like you need to do a bit more research before you do anything, bit i wound advise to go for an emp first, then have a desert species emps are generally more docile than desert species so good to begin with and find your feet kinda thing, we started with an emp and about a month later had a load of other species already, you will get addicted fast we have not been in the hobby all that long and already have 23 scorpions with 5 more on the way no 6 more sorry, and 2 tarantulas. A good desert species is the desert hairy/ Hadrurus arizonensis or some we have that I think are awesome are Scorpio maurus, both species like to burrow even though they are desert species so should use sand with excavator clay and wet and pack and and leave to dry before putting the scorpion in although some people so use loose sand I'm not sure how they burrow in it. Let us know what you decide, but please please make sure you do your research first there Is plenty Of information on this forum and other places, if you don't do your homework and set there homes upvas naturally as poss you will just have a stressed scorpion with many problems that will more than likely die in months, scorpions molt around 7 times from young to adult so it's crucial for the conditions to be correct for them to do so. Anyways welcome and Good luck any question feel free to ask | |

| ^i agree. a lot more research is needed. i almost made a mistake of trying to get a desert species. go for a forest scorpion. any pandinus species. i have a red claw, it is docile and grows to an impressive size, as do emps | |

| That was my thinking too, mine are very defensive and spin on the spot to confront me. Still good for a beginner scorp though because their care is very similar to Emps. | |

| Looks like a good deal you had there.
Tall enclosures mean more air to be heated. On the other hand, it also provides more fresh air (and better air movement since colder air parts will try to cool down the hotter parts => circulation) and if you dont mind the extra expense it brings, heating it.. it will always be healthier for the animals inside.
That said, only for desert species where moistureness is of no issue.

| we have a 75 watt infrared bulb on it that heats it fine along with the 2 T's and 3 madras so its no problem realy they all share lol haddy just sits in her burrow all the time so kinda wasted on her really, she never comes out shes weird, she came out a few times when we first got her last november but then she vanished, so in the end we dug her up coz we was worried but she was fine and quickly made a new burrow never to be seen out again (burrowed against the glass though which is handy to check on her lol) | |
