hey everyone. havent been on here in about a year. was planning on getting into scorps last year but it never happened. now that i have space and some free time i'm looking to get some scorps soon. just want to know what the best communal species are. I'm looking at heterometrus longimanus or babycurus jacksoni. other species that thrive communally? I have a 30gal. tank

If you've never kept scorps before, then I'd strongly recommend getting some emperors.
They are such a hardy species that you can afford to make your beginner mistakes with them. If you get the humidity wrong - they survive. If you get the temps wrong - they survive etc.

Not only that, but they have always been one of my favourites for appearance, and behaviour within communal groups.

Ah I see, no problem. Well, I mean I'm sure you'd be fine with any Heterometrus species because of their similarities to emps in regard to requirements etc - I was just making sure that you had kept a scorp prior to this. Smile
As for the B.Jacksoni, I have never kept this sp so I can't say whether or not I think you should go for it. Maybe someone who has experience of both sp can sway you one way or the other.

The genus Centruroides has communal sp. I'm not sure if they're all "communal," but I know some are. C. gracilis and C. vittatus are communal, I believe. I've also read that they do best in communal setups if they are adults, as the younger ones cannibalize much more often.
Uroctonus mordax are communal, too. And yes, B. jacksoni are a favorite for many people as are C. vittatus. They are a beautiful species.

Here's info on C. vittatus, straight from our forum:
https://scorpionforum.darkbb.com/caresheets-f29/centruroides-vittatus-t1132.htm

And this is a list of communal species of scorpions provided by a hobbyist. Some of these sp. I cannot confirm if they are communal, but you can search/google them up and check for yourself:

Lychas sp.
Tityus sp.
Vaejovid sp.
Chelirius sp.
Nebo sp.
Euscorpius sp.

And again thanks for the list. Thinking of getting C. Vittatus How big do they get as adults. That 2i was so small next to the penny

C. vittaus get about 2 1/2 inches long to the end of the tail. neat little scorp that is very communal and usually stay out in the open if you keep some upright cork-bark peices for them to climb on

Cool. I think my mind is set on them. Now I just need to find a good online dealer since the pet stores around here can only get emps. What is the rough price range on these tiny guys? And like I said in an earlier post I have a 30gal tank to work with so I'm looking at getting a lot. Should I split the tank and get another species with roughly the same requirements as C. Vittatus? If so which species? B. Jacksoni?

If youre looking for a good online dealer try tarantulainc.com . Last I checked they had c.vittaus in stock for 12or15$ each. I plan on getting a few as well.

That's the site I've been looking for. lol. thanks. Unfortunately I'm using my ps3 to surf the net and that site doesnt load properly. I can click on the scorps in the menu but after that it shows one scorpion and won't scroll to the rest.

How well would splitting the tank work with two different species? Obviously with roughly the same requirements. Like C. Vittatus and B. Jacksoni? Would that work?

You would need a divider that goes all the way from the bottom to the top of the tank.

We had someone on here earlier this year and they put in a divider but the scorps burrowed underneath the divder and squeezed through to the other sp side.

Well from what I've read C. Vittatus don't burrow. What about B. Jacksoni? I also read on here that C. Vittatus and C. Sculturatus/C.Exilicauda/whatever can be kept together without a divider.

Yeah, but vittatus, sculturatus and exilicauda are from the same genus.

They climb though as far as I'm aware, so if the cork/drift wood is angled towards the divider side then they could well go over the top of it.
Obviously you could just angle the wood against one of the other sides as they can't climb glass and that would solve that problem.

I was just saying that you would probably need a divider if you were to be keeping two species from different genus' together. Eg. Babycurus Jacksoni + c. vittatus.

OK so I've looked at online dealers for C. Vittatus and can't find anything. I'm still a few weeks away from having enough cash to pick everything up. I just want to make sure when I have the cash that I can order roughly 10-15 of these guys. If anyone here comes across a site or anyone here are looking to unload some please let me know.
Well I've searched the net for hours and can't find any C. Vittatus in stock. Went to SwiftInverts and they have B. Jacksoni cb babies 1/2 inch for $12. If I can't find C. Vittatus in the next few weeks I'm gonna go with these guys. Possibly Emps to be on the safe side since this will be my first communal setup and second time owning a scorp. I can get a lot of 10 Emps from Ken the Bug Guy for $100. Which imo is a good price. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Noctrnl

Try the classifieds here and you can also check out tarantulainc.com but I'm not sure if they have any in stock.
Try googling "Centruroides vittatus for sale" if you haven't already.

I was on tarantulainc the other day and they are out of stock on C. Vittatus. Actually they were out of stock on most of the species they have. Like I said I'm still a few weeks away from having the cash anyways so I'll keep looking. I read on here in the for sale/trade section a member is getting rid of a bunch of scorps including C. Vittatus. Just waiting for a response on how many he has, how much and how much to ship to the U.S.
