PostSubject: Tons of newbie questions...   Tons of newbie questions... Empty3/21/2010, 2:40 pm

Hi everyone! cat I just have some questions as I'm preparing for my first Emp.

1.Can they go in a 5 gal.? I have one and it's: 16" x 8" x 10".

2.I have some T-Rex Jungle Bed Premium Blend, could I put that as the substrate?

3.Should I start with a Juvenile, Sub Adult, or Adult?

4.I have a plexi-glass lid for the 5 gal., would I need to put something on it to weight it down?

5.Is occasional handling okay? I've heard it is but I want to be sure.

6.How much water should I put into the substrate for humidity?

7.My room gets somewhat cold at night, should I get an infra-red light?

8.What type of decor should I use?

9.How do I pick out an emp?

10.Would a TV bother them at night? (I sleep with it on, but usually turn off the sound)

11.Is there anything I should avoid putting in the cage?

12.How can I prevent bad mites?

Thanks and sorry for being such a Newb

1) One emp can live happily in a tank that sized yes.

2) That substrate it not suitable because it has bark chippings and calcium from what I read. Try and use coco fibre (AKA eco earth) Compact bricks of soil like substrate that expands in water - doesn't cost much and is easy to get hold of.

3) Because you are new to the hobby, I would suggest starting with an adult, but you will probably be ok with either of the other two. Its just that if you get an adult, you won't need to worry about molting. However, you don't know how old the scorp you are getting is.

4) I don't think you would need to weigh it down, no.

5) Occasional handling, every few months or so is fine, yes.

6) Pour water onto the substrate I mentioned earlier until it is damp but not soaking and that should give you perfect humidity at around 80%-90%

7) If you are using a heat mat (make sure it is on the back side and not underneath) then you probably won't need a lamp. If you don't use a mat, then you can get one if it would make you feel more comfortable about it. Emperors are a hardy species but the lamp would also enable you to see them at night.

Cool In terms of decor, just about anything should be fine. If unsure, suggest something you might like to use and we will tell you if it is ok.

9) What do you mean? A male from a female, a healthy scorp, or an adult from a juvenile/sub-adult?

10) Nope, the TV being on is fine.

11) Avoid putting in more than two crickets at any one time or from putting things in the tank taken directly from outside as a precaution against mites or parasites.

12) Remove any uneaten prey/ parts of prey after 24 hours.

Hope this helps. Smile

Thanks! And on picking out an Emp... I meant as in a healthy one. Very Happy I'll pick up a different substrate and decor sometime in the next few days.

For your substrate and tank humidity search the forum, the words ( False Bottom ). This will give you the most natural environment for your new scorp. It will take any guessing out of your humidity question

Okay, I got the Eco Earth bricks today, but I didn't get the hide. (Stupid, I know Rolling Eyes ) So I looked through some of my old hamster stuff and found this:

Could I use that as a hide? My (now dead) hamster only used it a couple times.
