| hi, im looking to get my first emp.i have been doing loads of research on how to look after them etc etc. i have a couple of questions tho. firstly what kind of a lid should i get to change my aquarium into a scorpion enclosure? im looking for something to keep the humidity right and also be secure to keep him in and others out. any links or info greatly appreciated as im looking to get setup asap. my tank is 52cm in length x 25cm deep.is this big enough for 2 or should i just get one for this size tank? if its only big enough for one should i get a male or female......as in is one more active than the other?? thanks | |

| Well You can either make your lid out of Plexiglas or you can but a locking one from a pet shop or major department store. What kind of setup are you gonna do?
That is enough space for 2.

| You just need to make a lid where some ventilation is viable but covers the vast majority of the top. I have glass tanks that have a solid glass lid, and I have a little strip on ventilation on the top of the back side. and yes, as Sithis said, that is definitely enough space for two. | |

| No light source is needed. Scorpions are negatively phototactic meaning they are sensitive to any time of light apart from infra red as they cannot see red light. | |

| Just get a small one. Dont need nothing crazy huge since your going to put it on the back. Also, if you wait a few days and wait till the scorpions have settled in and they have "there spot" where they will spend all there days at, you can put the heat pad there and you know that there resting against it. | |

| a wire mesh lid is fine. I have a 10 gallon tank and I use those universal mesh tops. They pretty much fit on all 10 gallon tanks I believe. I don't know where you live, but I got the top lid at Petco and the 10 gallon tank at Walmart. looks like this: http://www.bitsforpets.com/images/images_big/resized/clearseal-mesh-viv-lid.jpg | |

| As long as your tank is glass, any sized heat mat will do. I have some different sized ones with different watts and they all give me 28 degrees celsius. The only difference being that the larger ones cover a greater area. | |

| Will people PLEASE stop suggesting heavily-restricted ventilation? That's not going to benefit anyone; if your tank is drying out it's because you're not adding enough moisture to the substrate.
Anyway, as has been said, generic mesh lids work great. If you're concerned about unwanted border-crossings (pets getting in, scorps getting out), you can usually find locks to fit most lids.
The OP's tank sounds about like a 10-gallon; you could probably fit two or three adults in there.

| Yes its ok to leave your scorpion without heat for a few days as long as its still room temperature. Room temperature is between 70-75 which should be ok until you get everything set up. If you have a pad, its not necessary to have the light bulb set up. I myself have a bulb and a mat and i myself love my set up. I have a HUGE tank tho for my 2 emps because i wrather have wayyyy to much space than not enough. | |
