The only ones I would consider "starters" are the ones you find under rocks in your backyard . . . well, maybe not a backyard in Southern California (I'm not in the range of any Scolopendra spp.).
I figure the stone centipedes are good beginners because they're harmless, big enough to observe easily, and seem to be abundant. I don't know enough about Alipes to say how much of a beginner genus it is.
