| Bothriurus sp.?
Mine's been gravid for a little over a year now and still hasn't popped. I can even see the embryos.

| no idea mate this is one sp where there appears to be very little known about gestation and brood sizes.
I currently have the Bothriurus sp 'large claw' and she is massive. not eaten since I got her in may and still swelling.
They are a low temp species so I would suspect that they have long gestations.
Currently acquiring information with some other friends of mine so we can get some care sheets up

| Well I guess that I'll just have to be patient, huh? I have her kept around 80F during the day. Should I lower that since you said that they're a low-temp species? | |

| I would think lowering the temp would be a wise idea. | |

| looking at weather data specs for chile, it usually gets warm there (upto about 20oC thereabouts) nov/dec.
So I would have thought if they were going to have babies that would be the time for them to drop.
You never know we may wake up and find a nice xmas day present lmao!
But I hope for my little shiny yella lady it will be sooner, like early Nov, she looks like she swallowed a ping pong ball!

| Bothriurus gestation generally 10-12 months. If yours has exceeded this she may missed an environmental cue, possibly a cool period over our summer (northern hemis.). | |

| Well I noticed that she was getting fat around 8/13 of last year, so it's been roughly a year now.
What happens if they miss an environmental cue? ;x

| Short answer 'dunno'. This is an area that needs a lot more work doing and will depend on species as to how they will cope (keep notes, dates etc.). Both. species usually drop around our winter- Oct to Jan or there abouts in the wild, although wild caught captive specimens often drop up to a few months after their wild brethren. A paper on Paruroctonus mesaensis reports that individuals in the wild give birth from late July through August while laboratory specimens (in the same county/state) gave birth between September and December (1), so it is quite possible she may simply extend her gestation period. All you can really do is try to emulate the natural habitat and environment and hope for the best. I wish you luck and look forward to hearing how you/her get on.

| P.S. Seeing that she is now overdue, your best bet may to be to emulate the conditions of their birthing period (S. American summer). Good luck again. | |

| Thanks, Lisa. That link is indeed very useful! The part that stinks is that I'm not sure of the exact location in Chile that these guys come from... Bummer! Guess I gotta do some research. She hasn't eaten the last couple of times that I offered her food. Hopefully she'll drop a brood for me soon, as binksy said, she's HUGE! | |
