i don't know any 'special' name, we call it black sand.
i only use it for pictures, usually they live on sand/clay mix.

Sorry, I know it's an old post, but what instar is the Hottentotta Salei in? How big is it? And how big does they get?

i don't remember for sure, but this must be 5. or 6. instar. they grow up to about 2 1/2 inch full length. color and size are very similar to h.jayakari

Jayakari gets a bit more orange, doesn't they?

the dark back turned lighter, i took the pics right after molting. usually h.jayakari have dark pedipalps, h.salei light pedipalps with dark chela. but there's a wide variety in color.

i love the super hairy tail!
