Carboctonus keyserlingi question

Hi guys

How big do these fellas grow to as adults, how venomous are they and what size enclosure do they need to be housed in?

they only grow to just under 2" Fairly hardy scorpions

not particularly venomous

I keep most of mine in an 11" critter keeper with about 4-5" of substrate. I have layered substrate, mainly sand at the bottom, 50/50 sand/forest bed then forest bed with a little sand in. But they will be ok on forest bed with a touch of sand mixed in

Humidity around 50%

Some stones for them to burrow under... or the water bowl lol

fine at room temperature. where they occur in the wild varies from 16-26/7 degree's C daytime. But keep them at room temp, I have seen a few places on the net where it says keep them at 26 degree's C, and then they keep dying for some 'unknown' reason. It happened to one of my friends too. My room temp about 23-24 day and 21 on a night

i will have to see if i can find some literature on young rearing. they seem to be communal anyway.

the odd scrap when they are put in together but that was about it. So I would presume that they young should be communal. Just make sure there are plenty of stones for the to dig under. to help out stick ya finger through the substrate to give them a head start of a burrow.. or somewhere to hide until they sort out who is sleeping where. but if they are true to form they will probably ignore the pre made holes just to get on ya nerves lol!

So you'd recommend them LRC? Did yours come gravid? how long is gestation?

yes they are gravid, gestation... No Idea!!!!

reccomended, yes defo. They have impressive metasoma - really thick n chunky, almost buthidish like appearance. They really are an impressive little scorpion.

not to aggressive, they show aggression if you get to near then you get a little closer and they run off lol!

and you know how emperors have a blue/green sheen to them under light, these are more red. especially on the peds

What I also like from what i've heard is the fact that they dont need a heat source! Less wires hanging around the place. and no big tank needed good when you havent alot of room huh

I've used sand from the gardening department at Home Depot before -- seemed to work pretty well.

I use riverbed sand but i guess any sort of sand available on the markey for inverts/reptiles will be ok. I mix this with forest bed as they are found where there are sparodic plants and burrow under them. (I dont use the black sand because its like lots of tiny broken bits of glass and forever getting spells in my fingers from the chuffing stuff)

As a cost cutting measure, kids sand is usually steralised, obviously for the kids sake lol. And costs a fraction of what the herp sands do.

I used to keep my hadogenes on it and never has a problem. you can buy about 6 times as much kids sand as you would spending the same on desert sand.

Lisa, is that riverbed sand an 't-rex' type subtrate product? Of the different ones recommended which is better for burrowing? Also Lisa I think i'm gettting mine from the same place you got yours, were the sexed?

yes it is t-rex stuff. cant find a local supplier for any other sand!

you getting your scorps from Lee at the Spider Shop? If thats the case and you asked for specific sexes he does his best to sex them for you.

Ok the little guys will be with me by wednesday, Lisa you were recommending 50% humidity, as no-one recommends humidity gauges how would I guage the correct level?

Here is the set-up prepared for them.

50% humidity will be about what it is in ya room anyway so no need to guage it as such.

Make sure the water bowl is always full and may be spray a light misting once a week

That should be more than ok for them, really easy to keep

And that set up looks fine to me

cool! they will be able to burrow nice and deep.
