| why emps cant be kept on sand...??? i know everyone is advised not to but why??? they can burrow in it, you can keep the cage humid and it doesnt effect it. i cant see any bad reasons... and they stand out better.... doesnt mean i will do it. im sure mike will tell me why not. lol! | |

| well they arent found on sand in the wild. You dont find one in the desert. they have moulchy, mossy, soily substrate. As keepers we must try to make their home as close to what they would have in the wild as possible. reguardless if they are from a long line of Captive breds.
Sand cannot be burrowed in properly. Even sand for desert scorpions are mixed with a small part of clay to hold the burrows open and to form. Sand in the wild is different from sand in captivity and isnt just sand.
See it as this...you wouldnt put a brachypelma species on sand...so why make a scorpion go though it?

| Sand's not a salt, but it may have salt in it . . .
It can hold humidity when it's wet, and a burrow when it's been dried -- but I can't see it doing both very well.
I think it would also stick to the scorpion, but this is just conjecture.
I think it would also be too abrasive for a species that's not found on it naturally. | |

| I put my emp on sand for about a week when I first got her. I also had a 20" black light on the top of the enclosure. That was back when I was a noob | |

| No, i know you havent and wont do it. Shops are all about making the animal "look" good...the animal is already good and cool and super great. why put it in an enviroment that doesnt benefit it. Some shops make me go grrr like the shop that had a pandinus cavimanus on sand, no water bowl...totally try and under a heat lamp...poor thing was like a crisp....*sniff* | |
