| Hey guys, I am getting some white mold (i can wipe it off easily) on the wood pieces in my set up. I bought the wood from a pet shop.
What to do? is it dangerous to my asian forest scorpion?
Thank you very much | |

| It's probably not dangerous but some types of fungi can be nasty so I wouldn't risk it. Remove the wood, clean it off in hot water, and then bake it in the over to kill any spores.
One of the tricks I've found to reduce future mold growth on wood is to pour vinegar onto the wood, and let it soak in for say, half an hour. After that rinse the wood off and pat it semi dry with a paper towel. The vinegar will have changed the pH, making it more acidic, which makes it harder for mold to grow.
Having live plants and isopods in the tanks can also help with mold, as they can compete with the mold for available resources. | |

| Due to mould/fungus growth on wood I started using driftwood as I do in my fish tanks. We use driftwood in aquariums as it doesn't decay quickly, rot,or go mouldy under water,so i thought it would be good with scorpions,it is! Some pieces that had been in fish tanks for years don't show any signs of mould or fungus at all, aside from being fully cured perhaps the ph factor is coming into play,I hadn't thought of that! Thanks Scorpion19981000 Some newer pieces have shown the tiniest bit of mould/fungus where they enter the substrate,I know lack of ventilation is partly to blame in some of my tanks, but I'm thinking now that if after I prepare them as I usually do for fish tanks,I give them a vinegar bath, even that small amount might be avoided. | |
