| I saw some white dots in my emp scorpion tank moving around, and I'm not sure if they're harmful or not. Should I replace the substrate completely? | |

| There are others more knowledgeable on this than me, but from what I understand, the small, white, fast moving mites are thought by most to be harmless. They seem to be scavenger mites that eat organic waist matter in your enclosures. The harmful mites are the kind that are on your inverts and are very slow moving, or don't move at all. I think these latter ones are brown???
I have the kind of mites you are talking about as well. I find them annoying but I don't think they are harmful. A substrate change couldn't hurt. Putting isopods (see other recent threads on this) in your enclosures will help keep your cages clean. Mites need organic matter to eat. | |

| Ok, at least that's a relief, sort of. Is there any mite treatment that will get rid of them? Does Zoo med mite off or anything like that work? | |

| I wouldn't put any chemicals into your inverts' enclosures, it might kill the inverts. I think that Mite Off is meant for reptiles??? From what I now understand I wouldn't worry about the small, white, fast moving mites too much. If you get too many do a substrate change and think about getting some isopods (like rolly pollys). There are vendors for isopods online. I think I'm going to get some and start my own colony to keep in my tropical invert cages. | |
