My Hypothesis, can I get some input? Empty
PostSubject: My Hypothesis, can I get some input?    My Hypothesis, can I get some input? Empty10/16/2013, 6:57 pm

So here’s the thing…I’ll try to keep it short. My G.ankarana pair matured a three weeks ago (just days apart from each other). I decided to maximize the brood by allowing them to have a few meals and some extra time before pairing. I put them together yesterday and the male went crazy immediately looking for the female and twitching when he would catch her pheromone trail. They mated, a spermataphore was deposited, and by the looks of it seems to have been a successful paring. I have been keeping them both at room temps which have been at about high 70’s the past few weeks. I was thinking of turning up the heat the way I had them before they matured to speed up the metabolism and thereby decrease the gestation time. My question is, is there an ideal temperature to maximize brood size vs brood time? I was going to turn up the heat to mid 80’s but I’m starting to think maybe lower temps might increase gestation period but might have a higher success rate of developed babies. I mean I’m not a biologist nor an expert in scorpion biology so I’m thinking are the females eggs all fertilized immediately after mating? Does it take time for the females to fertilize her eggs? Maybe a specific range of temps would be ideal to maximize brood during the first few hours, days…weeks after mating.

I was thinking if temps were to low then not enough nutrition would be given to the developing embryos, if heat is to high the female and the embryos demand for nutrients would also be higher…so maybe there’s a sweet spot temp. Maybe I’m just over thinking this?

I'm by no means very knowledgeable in this area but I would think that the eggs may possibly not be fertilized immediately because some scorps can double clutch. So they are at least capable of delaying fertilization. Also I have read that scorps can suspend the development of a pregnancy if times are too difficult and can then turn it back on when times are better. There must be an optimal temp but I don't know what it would be. Trying to get mom to eat good quality prey should be helpful. Interesting subject.

Found some papers on scorpion biology I somehow forgot that there are two types of scorpion gestations. Katoikogenic and Apoikogenic.

I susupect Katoikogenic gestation can be influenced by temperature and other outside factors but Apoikogenic not so much since they are in a yolk filled egg if anything it might just speed up the process I gess fertility prior to mating would be key for a bigger brood. Wonder if there are anything we can feed specifically that would assist the scorpion in more egg devolpment. Hmmmm
