adding emps Empty
PostSubject: adding emps   adding emps Empty7/17/2013, 8:54 pm

I have a 3.5 inch juvenile female emperor in a 5.5 gallon. 4/4 inches of loose coco-fiber, always maintaining 80 degrees during the day and low 70's during night time, and 70-75% at all times. This is my first scorp and I'd like to pride myself on doing quite well for my first. My first question is signs to look for on molting, when will I see any signs that the molting process will begin, because I haven't owned her as she molted yet. Second question is adding another scorp; I'm addicted already and seriously considering adding another. Will I need at least a 10 gallon for two mid sized juveniles? or can I go with the 5.5 until they get bigger and upgrade? Also I'm assuming another female would be best, and will there be any issues with adding another scorp previous to getting my first? I don't want any fights!! also this is my first post in the forum so i appreciate it guys, thank you!

Well, a couple things that you fix first. The humidity should be a little higher. The temperature could also be a little higher in the night. Now if you can get pictures that would be great. Also, what color is the telson? If it is reddish-brown, the scorpion won't molt again because it is an adult. If not, your Pandinus imperator will look like a sausage. You will want a ten gallon with at least 4 inches of substrate, but 6 inches is preferred. If you want to add another scorpion, make sure there are more hides than scorpions. I think I covered everything. Let me know if I didn't.

A larger tank (10 gallons) would be appropriate for two Emperors. You should also pack down your substrate rather than leave it loose. Packed substrate allows for burrows and tunnels without collapsing.

The recommended method of adding Emperors to an enclosure is to remove the current occupants and rearrange the hides and other decorations. You might also want to re-landscape or simply stir up the top inch or so of substrate and tamp it down. This should eliminate any territorial and chemical clues held by the previous occupants and minimize disputes. Then, add all the scorpions to the enclosure at the same time.
