In spring of this year, I was given a female Uroctonus mordax. The only information I had was that it was collected near Detroit, Oregon, at the end of Summer 2008. I assumed this timing meant she would have recently given birth but not yet mated again.
Over the summer of 2009, as my other females produced broods, she did not. This did not come as a surprise.
Over the past month or so, this specimen grew larger and I thought she may be gravid after all.
I recently noticed embryos visible through her tergites. Then she became thin again, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Several days ago I offered her a prey item which she refused.
Today, I noticed five first-instar scorpions on the substrate, away from the hide, and one remaining on her back. Four of the five initially seemed as though they may be alive. Water was added to the substrate as a humidity booster (without disturbing the young) and the "dead" one began to move.
As I have already had one U. mordax successfully reach second instar away from the mother, I'm going to monitor this brood carefully to see what happens.
