Odd Behavior

Alright. I got a H. Longimanus about a month ago. Over the last 4 days, it's just stood there. In the same position in the corner of the tank. Sometimes hunkering low to the ground, other times, stilting, but just standing there with the tail curled over and the stinger almost resting on it's back. I'll post pictures tomorrow once my camera is charged up.

Details on the cage and scorp. It's about 4" body length, the cage is a 2.5 gallon aquarium with a false bottom and about 3" of organic potting soil. There's a couple slabs of bark leaning across the other side of the cage. The scorp used to hang out under those, now it's on the other end of the cage.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

Sounds like it found a favored "burrow" and has settled in for the long haul.

Lol. Alright. It doesn't seem like anything serious, I've just never seen a scorp doing this before.

I should add that 2.5 gallons isn't a lot for an adult H. longimanus.

I don't think it's an adult. How can I tell? I've never had any experience with Heterometrus

I must've misread that. H. longimanus in my experience are like emps in that juveniles have white telsons, subadults have cream telsons, and those of adults are brown.

Keep in mind, some Heterometrus spp. only have a dark telson at all stages and some species are known to fall under both categories.

Sounds like a scorpion to me. They have their moments of weirdness.

At 4" it's pretty adulted. At least not far from.
The tank should be a little bigger and maybe some more soil. These scorps can burrow deep and make quite big tunnels under ground. When you prepare a tank for scorps you can begin a burrow for them, since they most likely will continue where you left off, and this can help you make them burrow so that you can see them through the glass even though they are under ground.
I'm not sure with all the english terms for different kinds of soil. Just make sure its not fertilized or treated with chemicals as this can be harmful to the scorp.

That said, H's and P's are excellent scorps. Nice for showing off and nice for beginners.

I'll begin work on a new cage here soon. I have an extra 10 gallon im not using.

I used to have a P. Imp, but since he died, i went a while without any scorps, then last month, i get 3 and i'm taking care of my fiance's P. Exitalis. So, I need to buff up my knowledge of the little buggers.

We are all happy to help new scorpion keepers.

Yeah, I've been keeping T's and roaches for a year or so now, but I've only had scorpions for about a month (not counting my petstore P. Imp that only ate once and lived 5 months for me)
