no it's playing dead. It's a defence mechanism. when they are scared or unsure they play dead as some predators will not touch dead meat.
They can hold their breath for upto 5 mins at this age. 10-15 mins when they are older. Once they get to about 18" they stop doing it in captivity because they are big enough to defend themselves / stand their ground

On many a forum they say they can only last 2-3 minutes under water... I think not! Smile

I love them at this age they are all head and tail
