Newest family member. Heterometrus (what kind and what sex?)

Male definitely. Possibly H. petersii.

It hisses, idk if that is a reliable indicator as to the type of Heterometrus or not.

Oh they hiss. Even my emperors hiss. They sound like a toothbrush being brushed by your thumb.

Edit: H. petersii have black telsons as well. (from what I've read)

But don't take my word for it, I could be wrong. (about it being petersii)

Guats85: No I got him at the local Exotic Pets here in town. There are two left and I am pretty sure i know which one is female. i will be getting her, too.

Your scorps may also be capable of hissing. I know one of my emps does. He's always in a bad mood.

the only scorp i heard hissing was my r. junceus and at first i thought my aquarium's air pump got broke and is about to explode hahaha

oh geeze, hahaha, i can see myself doing that, like "what the... what the heck is that noise???" (meanwhile my scorpion is yelling at me in vain)

I would say male. Thought of Petersii but am still checking the web for more info to make that a calculated guess... In the meantime someone with more Heterometrus experience might confirm it more easily.

I found out that Heterometrus Laoticus is the only Heterometrus in the genus who has no granulation on the head (prosoma).

The pictures are very clear but if you have a close up of the top of the head I can see if there is some granulation. Then it might perhaps be H. Petersii.....

Well then judging by the color of the telson (black) and the un-pronounced tibula or whatever, I'd say it is Petersii. <3

Now you can truly say you have a pure black scorpion.
