| first thing never cut any part of a scorpion, looks like an emp, they are venemous all scorpions are, but no it is not dangerous the sting is equivalent to a bee sting, a pinch from the claws from this species would hurt more | |

| You have an adult Emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator). They are not deadly, but if provoked, they can give you a painful sting, or more likely, a very painful pinch. There's no need for you to touch it or handle it, so don't. If you cut any part of its tail, it will die. If you wish to keep it in captivity, the following documents will answer most of your questions and help you get started. | I'm glad to hear you released the scorpion. Emperor scorpions are not deadly, nor are they rare. They are collected by the tens of thousands in West Africa for export to the pet trade. (Or they were before being placed on the CITES list.) The wing/feather like structures you saw on the scorpions' belly are its pectines. These organs are used to detect vibrations in the ground. | |

| Sorry, I originally thought this was a wind up post and read it that the OP had in fact opened the lid of the enclosure and the scorpion had flown out with its new found wings. Over tired me thinks | |

| I all get it now, sorry guys. That means that he's male right? Yeah it actually looked like it had wings (or a moth coincidentally made my mind think wrong) It's an Emperor, right? People keep saying that I should kill it because if you step on it barefooted you're gonna die within 5 minutes and stuff. It's not deadly, right? I mean it's West Africa. I shouldn't probably worry. I hope it's an Emperor, just been wondering why it doesn't have whites stripes on its stomach or why it's quite skinny, and not fat. It's not really that big too.
Thanks.

Thanks. what the hell are you on about? are you trolling. It is an emperor, scorpions can be fat or thin just like people depending on wether its well fed and hydrated or if approaching a molt. They dont have white striped, no scorpion does as far as I can think do you mean stripes like this? thats what a fat or gravid scorpion would look like, the spaces between the armour if you will. Everyone is telling you its an emperor, its a very recognizable species we all know what it is. and if by chance we were all wrong, it is 100% a Pandinus of some description making it virtually harmless to humans

| I think shebeen hit the nail on the head. Pectines, wing like appendages found on the underside of all scorpions (both male and female).
I think maybe the language barrier has made everything a little confusing??

| So my emp is actually skinny? OR does that fat-white-strips appearance happen only when it is full? I'm serious. No trolls bro, the people keep saying that I should get rid of it. I should probably ask if they have seen it before and if they actually witnessed someone who died because of it.
What should I feed him? I keep bringing him grasshoppers, praying mantises, random insects smaller than it.. I don't really know if it likes it! I think it'd prefer crickets, I still don't know how to catch them. I'm gonna make a burrow for it anywho. It's probably hungry right now.

Lol are you serious? I just found out that it's male. Um. . . What now? (Joking, I read the thread.) Actually, the pectines are found on both sexes, however the male's pectines are larger than that of the female's. - shebeen wrote:

- I knew that it was, thanks. But I'm still not sure, it doesn't make a borrow. What kind of terrain/land does it want? Sand or something? What kind of environment? He doesn't drink water either. He just gets pissed off? What does it eat? .-. Non of the FAQs help. (some do actually)
Sorry, but I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what you mean. Some of your statements are contradictory or don't make sense. - Quote :

I suggest that you read over them again, all the answers to your questions are there. - Quote :
- What kind of terrain/land does it want? Sand or something?
Moist coco fiber, which is basically ground dehydrated coconut husk, (comes in a compressed brick) or peat would be the preferred substrate. - Quote :
- What kind of environment?
Well, preferably something that's as close to it's natural habitat as possible. - Quote :
- He doesn't drink water either.
Well, it's simply not thirsty. - Quote :
- He just gets pissed off?
I imagine you's be pretty pissed off if someone came along and put you in a cage....... - Quote :
- What does it eat?
For the most part, insects, other arachnids, and smaller arthropods.

- IDK!! I got a yellow (really beautiful) butterfly-moth thing that is really pretty much itchy it is a weird specie it's my first time to see it too. I got it the day before yesterday. I put it in where the scorpion was. It didn't it eat it. It killed it. The scorpion used its claws. In the next day the moth disappeared, I asked if somebody removed it but nobody did at all! So maybe it ate it, no? but it was quite big. I don't see even a single evidence of it being in the container. It looked like it didn't even put it there in the first place! .. so in the next day.. I got a praying mantis and put it over where the scorpion was It was night time, the scorpion didn't eat it! NOR attack it!! in the next day.. WTF!! IT DISAPPEARED WITHOUT A TRACE!! So i suspected that it was eaten. It was gone. I checked if the scorpion's stomach is full. I saw a pair of wings. It looked like it was the moth, but OUTSIDE! This is what it looks like, I can't describe it!!! (poor container bro, I'm gonna make it clean and cool tomorrow)
guys, It was about 10 minutes ago. I typed the whole message above 10 minutes ago. But. I freed Lioth. I don't care if it's deadly or not. I did it myself, I still don't know about the wings, but I know that it's a rare type. I honestly can't follow what you're saying........I'd probably have better luck reading something in German. (No offense intended, you were probably in a rush when you typed it?) - Quote :
- It seems like everybody wanted to kill it. Because without 5 minutes, you're dead. Idk I'm sure. Whether any [hopscotch] or not, I don't wanna die yet. I'm sure it's rare/something. I just did it because I felt sorry for the africans who died because of scorpions.
Yup, typical misconceptions about scorpions. Okay, first off, there is NOT a SINGLE species of scorpion in the ENTIRE WORLD that can kill a person within five minutes. Not a single one. That's not to say there aren't potentially dangerous scorpions, there are. However, only about 25 of around the 2,000 species described are considered medically significant. Of these, with the exception of maybe one or two species, fall in the buthidae family. The genera contain medically significant species that come to my mind are Androctonus, Buthus, Centruroides, Hottentotta, Leiurus, Mesobuthus, Parabuthus, Rhopalurus, and Tityus. All of these are buthids. I can only think of two other non-buthid species that are medically significant. These are Hemiscorpius lepturus (venom has a strong necrotic effect) and Nebo hierochonticus The venom of the latter has reportedly caused hemorrhaging and necrosis. . . however, the effects of the sting of this species on humans may be totally negligible. Your scorpion is a Pandinus imperator. Also know as the emperor scorpion. It falls in the family Scorpionidae. As previously mentioned, the venom is totally harmless to humans. (Although, it would still hurt quite a bit if you were to be stung.) Also keep in mind the scorpion venom has the potential to affect everyone differently.

| Only way a scorpion will even come close to killing you would be if it is part of any of the families mentioned above by Scorpion19981000 stung you and you have a major heart condition or medical respitory problems and have an allergic type reaction to the sting. You would have possible cardiac issues or respitory issues from the sting which could cause you to die. A regular healthy person would just have a lot of pain for a little while if stung by the above mentioned scorps. | |
