mites - Identification of mites Empty
PostSubject: Identification of mites   mites - Identification of mites Empty6/21/2012, 2:09 pm

Hi Guys

Just been doing a spot clean of one of my emporer scorpion enclosures that houses 3 juvenile scorps in.

I fed them a couple of waxworms that I thought had been eaten but just found one that had turned into a pupa if thats the right word and then died.

It smelt a little bit and was covered in small white mites (I am trying to upload pics now)

The mites were obviously feeding on the dead insect so I'm guessing they are just a cleaner mite but can someone just identify them once I have uploaded the pics just to confirm they are ok and nothing to worry about.

Thanks
Gary

Thanks for the reply, I'd rather not go the biological warfare way just yet especially if they are not harming my inverts or reps that are in the same room so if no one can help identify them ill order some of those just to make sure but would rather get a positive ID so I know what I'm dealing with

take a look here, i've post out the micro pic of the mites.

mites close up pic

they are mesostigmata that i believe in Acathrix sp and also Amrinus sp. be careful if they're not cleaner, they're not just eat the left over food, they also might stress out your scorps till death. Twisted Evil

Another thing you can do is remove the scorps and allow the tank to dry out that will kill them. Put it in direct sun light. Make sure to change out the substrate and clean up any body parts after you feed, to help keep them down. It worked for me in my emps.
