| It is not so much the adult scorpions cannot be kept communal. Hell, even solitary ones can do that without trouble.
It is more an issue with smaller scorpions running the same area as the adults. Put young scorpions with young scorpions, but dont mix them with adults. They will prey upon them with a vengeance after they leave the mom. After some time, the mom itself will do exactly the same thing.

| raided ocean floor's flat stones, it's an on the way drive from school. wood burrows are still in there, on the far sides. just a bunch of flat rocks 100% functional for the scorps https://i.servimg.com/u/f48/16/78/98/96/08271110.jpg called the shop. they said they dnt have a male. overnight order for the female should be in by friday. and im gonna take a refund on the male. | |

| I have my tiles on the outside of the enclosure and held in place with masking tape along the top and bottom edges. I thought about putting them inside but decided that would be too permanent. Plus, I want to be able to checkout any burrows that develop up to or along the glass. | |

| i would go with Shebeens tile approach.i will do the same on a future viv as well. why did you do that to the inside of your viv? you had it close to a masterpiece with the two plateaus and a valley of [hopscotch]. | |

| 8 29 11 ... day1. the female is smaller, allowing her to fortify or possibly grow before allowing the male out. her shipping container remains in there as a sandbox. this is the behavior so far. allowing the male out after 2 feeds, 1 month https://i.servimg.com/u/f48/16/78/98/96/08291110.jpg | |

| an atrocity to satisfy a keeper's desire for a communal m/f h.arizonesis?
im looking for guidance and no severed telsons.
i have a male 15CM h.arizonesis and 10CM female h.arizonesis living in a 40gallon 36X12X16 8" 20%excavator5%cocofiber70%playground sand, addtitional layer of coco fiber 1", 1" more sand, 1" aspen random decor and hides.
along the skull, gravel, dried moss, aspen and a lil cocofiber.
on the far wall, ive seen the female run across above or through the chain of burrows. no fights yet.
the male moves slowly to intercept, but never does, yet.
i got a close look at him just now in the front right corner burrow. he was juddering his pediclaps and legs at me! hahahha he's desperate LoL
scorps are the most nutritious meal for scorps. he isnt super fat. he slimmed down from the monday meal.
one thing i learned so far... h.arizonesis love to mess with dried cocofiber, the most! sand is their 2nd preference.
the laptop's monitor doesnt bother them, but my 60watt incandescent does. i'm going to illuminate my room with a red light. i need to finish homework. i have a heavy towel draped over the viv right now

| relax. it's all good. i accomplished my goal, m and f h.arizonesis living communal. jus sharing my pets, and i am open to suggestion. female's territory was re-established to the left, hotter side, and the male's territory moved to the right side. they did it without a fight. he moved to the right, and she ran to the left. she runs and avoids him, whenever he is too close. now they are just living in their side of the viv. they both started good burrows at the petsmart wood burrows, but they only penetrated 3" of the 8" substrate. the temperature averages 90F day, and 80-85F at night. every couple of hours at night, he patrols the right side or continues to demolish the right side, but he hasnt made his burrow any deeper. LoL you hate the mess, so does the male scorp. he's tossin aspen everywhere! LoL it would be nice if he work on his burrow more. the female hides in the wood burrow and ambushes prey. she hasnt worked on her burrow either. she's eating 3cricks. sorry i havent upgraded to a real camera yet. here's a shot b4 i left for work: | |

| "20%excavator5%cocofiber70%playground sand, addtitional layer of coco fiber 1", 1" more sand, 1" aspen random decor and hides."
I'd swap the ratio of excavator and play sand around, so your scorps can burrow better. I'd then toss off the random coco fiber and aspen...
Also since you are using a glass tank, remember to watch how high you stack that substrate. I've seen many people blow out a side wall on a glass tank due to the weight of the sand (as most people use the reptile tanks and not actual fish tanks, which are made to store/hold water whereas the reptile tanks aren't even tested or designed/meant for it).
Cheers,
Rob | |

| thank you very much! i kept the random decor around the male... he dives into the brush to hide from me LoL i pushed the junk toward me. to hide me. they are very afraid of me i put the junk in there bc i was wary that they would fight.... it's cleaner... i had 3 weeks to have the viv ready, now im moving stuff around with the scorps in there eventually i'll home depot tile the rear walls. the viv is a used aquarium ... thanks ill be careful with too much sub i think 8" in a 40 gallon is enough | |

| i agree with everything tdark just wrote.
i moved stuff while my scorps were in there to a minimal and took notes on the major things i wanted to do and saved that for a substrate change.
haha if they really want to fight theyll fight on top of the junk.
scorpions dont like people

| Yeah, the best option to get them not to fight is to provide them with an enclosure similar to wild conditions, thus more clay would be best, as arizonesis would burrow in the wild and not really mess with other stuff!
Cheers,
Rob
P.S. - Also if push comes to shove they will dig or slide under something flat placed on the ground, I like cork because of its properties.

| I use a mixture of 20% excavator clay to 80% play sand. The haddy has been digging like mad and the burrows are holding up fine. A 25/75 mixture would probably work just as well. I wouldn't add more than 30% excavator clay in fear of making the substrate too hard. I would also lose the coco fiber and aspen shavings; it's doubtful that you'd encounter them in the middle of the desert. | |

| cute couple? i agree shebeen. no more than 30% excavator. the current mixed sub is diggable, but they only dig a lil every night. i think they will have a nice burrow in a couple months "The Desert Hairy Scorpion is found in burrows in sandy scrub areas."(http://www.care-sheet.com/index/Hadrurus_arizonensis) The small bit of aspens and dried moss was used by the scorpions. They are strong, and moved a couple flat rocks less than an inch. They are using the scrub as "doors" to their burrows. | |
