Home made snake hook.

Howdy all,
To put everyone's mind at ease (Both on the forum and in my family) I caved in and bought the supplies to make my own snake hook. I don't remember where I read about how to do it, I think it may have been a post on here somewhere, but it was cheap and effective. It's almost six feet long and more than enough to handle the rattle snakes and bull snakes and about anything else that slithers here in Wyoming and back in ohio.

The main shaft is a broom handle and the hook part is made from a paint roller. I simply took the paint roller apart where you would put the brush on and screwed the roller handle onto the broom handle, securing it with electrical tape (Soon to be reinforced with duct tape) The paint roller thing cost $1.79 and the broom handle was $4.99. So for $7.05 (including tax) I have effectively put myself out of harms way in the midst of one of my favorite hobbies, field herping. So you will all have Wyatt around for years to come! Very Happy

Thanks spinnin_tom, I'm excited to use it now. I just have to find a snake worth of it. LOL. I'm hoping for a giant Bull snake or a huge rattler.

Solid, I would of gone for a golf club shaft instead of the broom stick (due to wood properties, and I find it hard to work with hots with a hook that's much longer then 40-44 inches (due to diminished maneuverability)... Good call on the actual hook portion, its much easier to use that shape, similar to an L, then it is a typical snake hook, considering the types of hots you are dealing with!

I see you also taped the hook end for extra traction (benefit for you) good idea! I would go to a hardware or fish store and get a 3" piece of silicon tubing cut for you and slip it over that, its even more "tacky" and "rubbery" they work great for slowing down even the fastest elapid and it won't be more then $0.30...
