| Solid, I would of gone for a golf club shaft instead of the broom stick (due to wood properties, and I find it hard to work with hots with a hook that's much longer then 40-44 inches (due to diminished maneuverability)... Good call on the actual hook portion, its much easier to use that shape, similar to an L, then it is a typical snake hook, considering the types of hots you are dealing with!
I see you also taped the hook end for extra traction (benefit for you) good idea! I would go to a hardware or fish store and get a 3" piece of silicon tubing cut for you and slip it over that, its even more "tacky" and "rubbery" they work great for slowing down even the fastest elapid and it won't be more then $0.30...
