| Here's my small collection of African Dwarf Frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri). They're fully aquatic frogs native to the Congo region of Africa. In the US, you can buy them at most pet shops that sell tropical freshwater fish. They have lungs and breath air but spend their entire lives under water. I keep three frogs, along with an otto catfish, in a 3 gallon planted aquarium. These frogs only grow to about 1.5 inches snout to vent. This one here is a juvenile male. I have 1 male and 2 females. These are the only frogs that have webbed front feet. They can stay submerged for up to an hour, then they need to surface for a gulp of air. They have no eyelids or tongues. Often, they will go into zen mode where they remain motionless for 10 or 20 minutes. When they shed their skin, they usually eat it. | |

| I've had these for over a year and haven't heard a sound from them, although some keepers report that theirs produce a faint hum. | |

| I think they eat their skin to prevent all that protein from going to waste, similar to the way some spiders eat their web before spinning a new one. In the wild, you never know when you'll get your next meal.
Anubis is a great aquatic plant. Besides being one of the few plants that I can actually keep alive, rooting it to rocks or driftwood allows you to remove it from the tank when you need to perform a through gravel cleaning. | |
