[Discussion] Androctonus spp.

I used my pc to enlarge the picture and estimated the right pectine. It's 28-30 pectine tooth.

Just for reference, among my Andro specimens, females are mostly 26 pectine and below... but do note that A.australis females has recordings up to 29 pectine tooth.

Till you get a macro shot.. its a little soon to decide.

Even if you're still on the same camera, you should get a better shot by his/her next molt.

Anways, you'll definitely end up with more than a few pairs for 2 batch of scorplings

Thanks GS, I guess I should clarify, they are from the same brood, I just got two difference groups of then. But I still have to agree with you out of 15 scorpions there has to be a couple of pairs. Although I'm not to keen on inbreeding or is that a problem with Arachnids? I would imagine that there would be a lot of that in the wild.

ive never had any ill effects inbreeding scorps,not saying there isnt problems,but i have done it for up to 3 generations(junceas)with no problems.

If given a choice, i'll not do inbreeding too. Although as of my current experience, it does not harm them in any way.

If you really want new bloodline in your A.australis breeding project.
You can always trade with fellow hobbist in your area

does inbreeding affects the growth/size of an individual scorpion? especially on adult sp?

5 of the 6 showed up this weekend and they look great! Although one appears to have some sand stuck to it head. ???

Sad day for me today..... found one of my little 3i bicolors dead with cricket halfway eaten. Strange to see him die while eating... cricket still in his mouth, anyone heard about this before?

Was this the case only with androctonus spp?

No. Mine was not.

this dieing while eating seems to happen quite often....soo weird...sorry for your loss little dude

maybe your scorp was poisoned with cricket contaminated with pesticides or parasites.. sorry for your loss sir.

it is weird at least 4 people have reported this happening in the last few months....very very strange

I'm wondering if there is any similarities in the health status / keeping conditions of the scorps (belonging to the 4 keepers) before that very last cricket was consumed... halfway...

None reported with roach being the feeder?

Well, mine was not an Androctonus and this happened to me one time. It was my first scorpion ever and I was 15 or 16 at the time, so over ten years ago. I'm positive I was doing something wrong. It was a store bought cricket that it was eating, and the scorpion was a wild caught juvenile I found while camping. Most likely a Vaejovidae of some sort.

I just read this very cool thread. I am trying to decide which to start out first with either A.bicolor or A.australis? I got out of the hobby a few years ago but I am getting back into it.

I believe someone has asked a similar question in some pages back in this thread as well.
Both A.australis and A.bicolor have similar husbandry as well as venom potency (not exactly identical but i'll give similar security constrains to both)

After getting yourself ready for Andro with regards of proper securing their enclosure and other safety precautions when dealing with them.. you might wish to ask yourself if you prefer a yellow Fat-tail scorpion which averages at 10cm as adults or something black which reaches approx. 7-8cm as adults
