Desert Hairys £12.95 from spider shop!

Hey all dunno if any of you know but just found out the spider shop has got some Hadrurus arizonensis
Desert Hairy Scorpion for £12.95  they are small ones though!

Yeah I posted these yesterday on Nev's WTB: desert hairy thread but didn't realise he's not in the UK. H. arizonensis have serious problems moulting in captivity and wouldn't advise getting a small one. They've got medium and large which would be a much safer bet.

hmmm... an interesting challenge... the admin abyss (i think it was him) on here has bred them and brought up the babies, so it is possible... im tempted, however its a bit cold to post them at the moment.

however, a better way to spend your money is on one of his Vaejovis spinigerus... i might have to spend some xmas money lol!

I think Abyss sprayed under their hides every now and then or during molting, but I've also seen other hobbyists do the false bottom technique. They provided them with a very deep amount of substrate, around 8 inches deep and allowed it to stay dry on top, but would every now and then moisten the bottom of the substrate. In the wild they're able to use their burrows to gauge the humidity level they want, so these hobbyists were trying to replicate that with a lot of substrate and moistening the lower levels.

Yea, but it will be a 99,99% failure, so better drop the extra money and pay for an adult! Maybe even 1.1 and experiment with the offsprings of those... That way it won't cost you any money

I actually had high success doing both. Actually i took it a step forward. My tank had a divider so only half the enclosure had a false bottom set up and the other half was kept dry. I have to look at my notes to figure out how often i would spray the hides but If i recall it was every 2 weeks....or so.

i am now looking for a tall tank... i was thinking of making it 10 inches deep (or more) with a false bottom and the bottom inch above the false bottom being coco fibre then the next 9:1 coco fibre:sand and so on, until the top inch of sand. then having a tube going down to the false bottom so i can fill it up when it looks like its coming up to a moult.

however i lack a tank or sand or coco fibre or a scorpion at the moment so it will have to wait lol!

sounds like a good experiment--better starting collecting those items lol

Hey Abyss, when the scorpion was molting, did it ever prefer a side?

thats a good question. For the most part they usually came out out of their tunnels and stayed under the moist hides.

I actually found a breeder in my province here and he has adults. Just need to get a heat pad. Might pick up a ZooMed since my Exo Terra pad is crap. Then Ill get the scorp.

Whats the avg price for a DH? Guy locally wants to sell me one for $40CDN male or female adult.

Well we payed £40 for our adult delivered but the spider shop are selling small ones for £12.95

He sells his $40 plus $35 next day shipping = $75 CDN (About £50) I figured that was costly for a scorpion.

Wow, Nev, that is very expensive. I thought it was $40 shipped and even then that's a little steep for me. I suppose it can't be helped since you're in Canada, but I still would not pay $75 for a DH. Unless you're loaded and don't mind, go for it, but I will see if I can help you find a better deal!

Abyss: That's good to know, man. People keep spreading as if it's fact that they like it bone dry. They need to try something new if molts keep failing! I think it's a case of mycosis paranoia
