Is it normal for emps to spend a few hours next to their heating element?

Hard to predict some behaviour.

If they are too cold, they might spend some time there to warm up.

As long as the heater isn't at the bottom of the tank, the emp will go where it is comfortable. They won't willingly scorch themselves. (at least to my knowledge) unless they can't escape the heat.

yea I'm sure everything is fine, I have one part of the tank that is about 82 and as it gets farther away from the heater it works its way to about 72, which I know is a bit too cool but I haven't been able to raise it. I'm paranoid about my scorpions lol.

I understand completely. Anytime anything seems out of place, I run onto the forums and ask about it.

My guess now that I know the temp of your tank is that he's hanging by the heater b/c that side of the tank is nearing the lower end of "comfortable".

If it's only 82, he'll be fine by the heater, and is likely doing that due to the temp on the other side.

What type of heating element/tank size are you using?

its a repti therm heating pad. The tank is plastic and 17 x 12 x 7 in. I know your not suppose to use heat pads on plastic but this is the mini series and its wattage is low enough for plastic. I want to us e a ceramic heat emitter but a of now, I dont have the proper setup for one.

Yes. Make sure your heat mat/pad is on the back side of the tank and not underneath.
